Going on vacation and don't speak a lick of French. I know I'll be on my in the streets (and in cabs!) but it would be nice to be able to ask questions of the hotel staff.

Google: Holiday Inn Paris
My wife and I stayed in a Holiday Inn in Bruxelles a couple summers ago and were very satisfied. The same trip my sister and her husband stayed in Paris at a no-name hotel and would not do it again. In fact we specifically choice to skip Paris, based on the reputation of the French people's attitude toward tourist and Americans in particular.
I would agree with staying away from small, no-name hotels if english speaking staff is the most important consideration. If the hotel is rather large (more than 30 rooms) and in a touristy area (Champs Elysee, Latin Quarter, Louvre) the staff will speak English. If you have to book before your trip, look on the hotel’s website to make sure they will speak english – I would also say if a hotel in Paris has a website, they most likely cater to tourists, and therefore speak English.
