What is a good medication, or treatment, for anxiety attacks?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) December 14th, 2017

Grounding exercises do not work. I see my psychiatry doctor in one hour. 3pm mountain Standard time. I get a panic attack between 7 and 9 pm once a week and I run out of school diploma exams terrified. Exams are coming up in January. I have 5 – 15 minutes with the doctor. I switched to caffeine and sugar free pop.

Your doctor would be the best person to ask. Explain it to them just like you said here. If it’s only once a week, you’d want to ask about a short acting medication.

I think Xanax is a go-to medication for anxiety

Cognitive therapy can help. Personally, I find the ABCDE-technique explained in Martin Seligman’s Learned Optimism helpful. I’ve gotten very good at talking myself down.

Stay away from Xanex if possible. There really are no good meds for anxiety, it’s hard to treat. Cardio works most of the time. For emergencies Benadryl actually helps.

For natural relief, I use an herbal product called Emotional Ally. It’s made by a company called Wishgarden, and I’ve found it in natural food stores, as well as online. A couple droppers in a glass of water or juice works pretty fast for me, and I don’t feel at all drugged, just “normal”. Also seems to calm me at night for sleep during times when I have a lot on my mind. You might give it a try.

@RedDeerGuy1 , Why do you have to keep taking diploma exams? You never study for them and keep getting the same scores. Is this something the government requires. What would happen if you did not take them?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@LostInParadise I don’t have the marks to make it to university. I also need more science credits to go to science in university.

You should either start studying for the exams or stop taking them. Maybe you should go to a two year program. Didn’t you say you were considering psychiatric nursing?

@all Update: Turns out that cabbage, Brussel spouts and some other greens can’t mix properly with one of my medications. I would normally eat an egg or spring roll for a snack from my Asian restaurant for a treat. Good to know most of my night time anxiety is gone now. I also started a new drug that works wonders. Now I need to test on morning diploma English exams this year.
