Is Die Hard, a "Christmas" movie?

Asked by MrGrimm888 (19474points) December 16th, 2017

I heard this debate, on “Mike and Mike,” a while back. I’ve heard it a couple of other times.

Absolutely. It starts with a Christmas party and that’s a recurring theme. And the movie has Christmas songs playing all through and through.

That said, it’s probably not as seasonally inspiring as “Miracle on 34th Street”

It’s a movie set during Christmas, but it’s not a “Christmas” movie. The main driving plot should be about Christmas to be considered one

No. Same thing with Gremlins and You’ve Got Mail. Both are during Christmas but most people probably wouldn’t consider them Christmas movies, not like A Christmas Story.

It’s not Christmas until I see Hans Gruber fall from the 30th floor of the Nakatomi building.

No, it is a David Carradine documentary.

Yes. There are no stipulations that a Christmas movie must be vanilla.

“Home Alone” can be said to be Xmas movie but not “Die Hard”.

Die Hard is the best christmas movie ever.

Thanks, I was trying to decide what to watch this afternoon!

It could have been if Bruce Willis had worn a Santa hat.

@flutherother He put one on the first guy he killed, right?

He wrote “now I have a machine gun Ho-Ho-Ho” on that one guys shirt…

A better question is: “Should the definition of ‘Christmas Movie’ category be broad enough to include movies like ‘Die Hard?’” Because that’s what the debate really comes down to—where the arbitrary boundary on an arbitrary movie category is set.

I will say though that if “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie, then The Night the Reindeer Died also counts.

Numerous friends of mine and family scolded me for calling Krampus a movie to watch during Halloween. They all said it’s a Christmas movie.

I watched it in October anyway.

flutherother's avatar

@flameboi He did, and he got a machine gun as a present. I’m putting Die Hard back on my Christmas watch list.

I didn’t consider it one. I consider Christmas movies to be family movies as well?

@johnpowell Ceaser Cipher +7? is that your code?

From the Guardian newspaper today (12/21) link

Do writers from the Guardian get ideas from Fluther?

I would not classify it as a Christmas movie. It is more an action movie. Christmas is in the background to the main story.
