For the sake of this question, assume that heaven and hell exist. Suppose you arrived in heaven and it turned out that nothing was as it had been promised. What recourse would you have?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33577points) December 24th, 2017

This question is derived from an article I read recently.

Suppose you get to heaven, and it isn’t the idyllic place that you were taught about at church. Supposing it was no different than living on Earth today, or (at worst) a whole lot like hell.

Would you feel cheated, like you had lived your whole life in pursuit of what turned out to be a lie?

What could you do about it? Is there any recourse?

Can we expect “truth in preaching” from our clergy?

I think anything is preferable to reincarnation. One go round on this stinking’ pile of rocks is enough for me. Wouldn’t mind just hanging around in spirit form though. Have you heard about the EVP phenomena? Supposedly voices of the dead caught on tape. All the rage in ghost hunter circles. I saw a series of EVPs on one of those paranormal blogs that kind of ties in to your question. One spirit complained that the here after was not what she had been led to think. Another spirit plainly says, “Boo hoo, Baptist”. Lol

There has been nothing promised to me about heaven (Jews, especially atheist Jews, don’t have any concept of heaven or hell). So I wouldn’t expect anything.

What makes you think I would be destined for Heaven?
I been so naughty, Santa has had to retrace my name in his bad list because the ink fades every few years.

Maybe heaven and hell are the same, and it is the nature of our soul that determines how we experience it.

I have to confess that this is not an original idea of mine. I saw a show on television years ago (unfortunately I don’t remember anything else about it) where there were two people in the same afterlife place, one who felt it was heaven and one who felt it was hell.

I imagine heaven to be a place where all the negativity disappears. You are surrounded by happiness and contentment. You get a peek at the grand scheme. Hell would be the place where all the petty angers, evil thoughts, hatred, etc are magnified and all around you are sharing in it. There is no peace. If I died and found out I was just in the next life, okay. I learned something! It would be really awesome if I could remember a lot of what I learned in this life and didn’t have to make the same mistakes again.

What I have been promised is sitting around on clouds with my dead relatives for an eternity. It doesn’t appeal to me now and after 500 years will appeal even less.

Just another of religion’s false promises unmasked.

@stanleybmanly
How would you do that without a lawyer?

Hell must be full of them!

Reminds me of the joke about having a baseball match between heaven and hell. God says to Satan, “You don’t stand a chance. We have all the greatest players.” Satan answers, “Maybe, but we have all the umpires.”
