Do you like auctions?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) December 27th, 2017

A friend just told me about this place, Tophatter.com. It’s addictive! A $2000 drone camera just sold for $41! A $500 Nikon just sold for $20. Somebody get me out of there!

No. I prefer predictable, set-in-stone prices.

“It’s addictive! ”
Exactly why you in particular should not do it.

I just bought 6 bath towels for $5.00. We will see.

I don’t have an addictive personality @ragingloli. I can control my money. I very rarely impulse buy.

Six years ago we bought a stack washer and dryer like this for $150.

We bought barristers bookshelves like this for $100. I’d been wanting one for years and years.

You can also really burn yourself at auctions too, so you have to be careful! But, for the most part, we’re ahead of the game.

I used to do auctions on EBay and refreshing every 5 minutes to guaranty a cheap purchase.

I had a lady cheat me at auction once. The auctioneers were pretty pissed at her but I just let it go.

Who wouldn’t love a dutch auction?

that’s a dangerous place if you have the time to hang out there. I accuse Dutchess of being in league with the devil for exposing us to such temptation.

Sold! To the lady with the Dutch Oven! Don’t forget to pay the Auctioneer! Who’ll gimme a 50 dollar bill?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Not me @NomoreY! Hell no! I’m not going over fiddy cents for that!!

LOL! We are well acquainted with one of the auctioneers in town. In fact, he was my realtor when I bought my house 20 years ago.
One time he opened a bid at $5.00 for something and I just looked at him, and cocked my head like, “Are you insane??”
Danny said, “Four dollars?”
I shook my head firmly.
“Three dollars?”
Rolled my eyes.
“One dollar….?”
I nodded and shot my hand up. This was all done with looks. Not a single word passed between us! I like him.
What ever it was sold for about $15.00 but I wasn’t going to go over $5 so I didn’t get it.

I’m really good about setting a firm price in my head of what I’m willing to pay, and almost never go past it. Leaves me almost in tears sometimes but…that’s auction.

Another thing I love about auction is they have homemade brownies there! .50 for two large pieces! That’s the only time I eat brownies.

@Dutchess_III. What kind of brownies? The chocolate ones or the kind that have you grooving on a crack in the plaster or contemplating the nature of the Cosmos? : )

Dutchess_III's avatar

Naw, not that kind @NomoreY_A! They’re made by old grammas. I only had Coloma Brownies once in my life. It was in the 70’s. It was like “Who the hell put straw in these brownies??!” I guess the technique hadn’t been perfected at that point. They were nasty and disappointing.
