Why was it so hard to stop the bleeding from a small cut on my finger?
I have had cuts to my fingers before, and it never required more than a bandaid to stop the bleeding. This morning I cut my pinky finger near the base. The wound was superficial but it was larger than usual, about the size and shape of half of a dime. The bleeding was slow, but it would not stop. I was eventually able to stop it by placing part of a paper towel over my finger with an elastic to put pressure on the wound. Was it the size of the cut that made the difference?

Aspirin will thin the blood and make it less likely to clot. Have you used aspirin of late? You may also have cut into an artery that was bring fresh blood to that part of your hand, and fresh blood from the lungs may be less likely to clot than, say, blood from a vein (blood returning to the heart and lungs.) To stop bleeding, you must apply pressure DIRECTLY to the wound, so don’t rely on an elastic (band-aid) to get the job done.
Alcohol also thins the blood so if you had a couple of drinks last night, it might be the reason.
I did not take aspirin or alcohol. There is a prescription pill that I have recently started using. I wonder if that might be the cause. If I had hit an artery, wouldn’t the bleeding have been fairly fast?
If you had hit an artery you would have known it by now. I hope you are ok!
Bleeding is affected by medication and drugs, If you feel it is affected, you might want to see a doctor in order to get the right meds for you.
Sometimes it can also be a sign of lack of iron in your blood. It can happen to females sometimes due to irregular or “unsusal” period.
If it doesn’t stop, I would recommend going to hospital (if it is still a problem)
Good luck and lots of love!
Bright red blood comes from an artery, dark blood comes from a vein.
I think this was just capillaries. The bleeding was very slow. In any event, the cut seems to be healing okay.
