When buying something from an individual online, via a picture, do you look to see what the surrounding area looks like around the item?
I do. If the piece looks OK, but there is a bunch of shit and trash around it I go on by.
By the same token, if I’m going to post a picture of something in my house, even just for fun on Facebook, I do a little prep work first. Usually. My husband’s profile picture is one I took about 10 years ago. His damn motorcycle is parked in my nice living room! Each time I see it I cringe at the dust on the buffet. I could photoshop it I suppose but…naw.

I don’t remember ever worrying about that. If I’m buying something – say some electronics – my concern is that it works, not whether his or her floor is clean.
The thought is, if he doesn’t take care of his stuff, chances are he hasn’t taken care of whatever he’s selling.
@Dutchess_III – that’s a pretty big leap to make, at least for me.
…It’s not for me. Not in my experience.
I would. I would be loathe to buy a piece of furniture, for example, from a picture that looked like it came from a trailer trash home.
I typically click on to the next item if the photo production values are poor.
Selling on eBay, I take care with my photography. I use a piece of canvas for a seamless background, or choose neutral, un-busy backgrounds. I take really nice product photos, if I do say so myself.
Nice @Call_Me_Jay! I think in the back of my mind I knew that a solid color background is best, but now I know it in the front of my mind. Thanks.
Here are some food canisters that I advertised for sale on FB. The background wasn’t blank, but I did stage the shoot so that the background was attractive. (They didn’t sell. I put them in my Goodwill basket.)
