If you follow the custom of having sweets on New Year's Day, what are the sweets of your choice?

Asked by Jeruba (56106points) January 1st, 2018

What sweets or other special foods are you having today?

I wanted to bake a cake last night, but I found that I had no tinned frosting and no confectioner’s sugar. So today I’m going to bake a banana loaf, which doesn’t need frosting.

There’s also a ton of candy around. As if I didn’t have enough, I bought extra when it went on sale right after Christmas. Hershey’s Kisses, mmmm.

What is it for you?

I never heard of that custom but I don’t have any particular ones associated with New Year’s.

A piece or 2 of fudge????? Are you girls confined in a convent or perhaps some backwater prison or concentration camp?

chyna's avatar

I’m in a backwater prison camp. My punishment is only one piece of fudge a day.

My lovely wife knows I have a hell of a sweet tooth, and she indulges me during the holidays with a big bag of chocolate drops. After I eat my fill she gets on to me and says, I’m hiding the rest of these Tim or you won’t leave any for the kids! Well hells bells, they got candy from Santa! I think paw paw is entitled to my own stash.

I thought many cultures had a tradition of sweets at the new year, no matter when the new year celebration comes in the Western calendar.

For instance, Rosh Hashanah? and Chinese New Year?

@Jeruba You’re right, apples dipped in honey on Rosh HaShanah for a sweet year.

I’ve eaten very little in the way of sweets. Some pie on Christmas day, and that’s about it.
Rick, however, brought home 4 plates of various kinds of cookies from his family’s get together, and a whole big box of peanut brittle. He ate it all (except for the peanut brittle, which he’s diligently working on,) all by himself, in just the last week. Yeah, he’s gained weight too. I haven’t gained any weight. I worked too hard losing the 15 pounds I lost last year and I’m not putting it back on.
