How should I interpret this (internship application response)?

Asked by VirgoGirl826 (469points) January 3rd, 2018

Yesterday I emailed my portfolio and resume to some interior design firms; today, one of them emailed me back:
“Good Afternoon (my name),
We appreciate your interest in Hastings Architecture Associates, LLC and acknowledge receipt of your resume information. We review all candidates as we receive interest and evaluate against our internal needs.
We will be back in touch with you should your experience and portfolio align with those needs. Otherwise, we will keep your information on file for future needs.”

I already looked it up and saw that “we’ll keep your info on file” is often put in rejection letters, and that sometimes they have no actual intention of ever looking at a person’s stuff again… I guess I just want to know if this response is just a basic, soft rejection or is there some hope lol

It’s a basic acknowledgment that they have received your résumé – so that you won’t keep pestering them when you don’t hear back within a week or so. The basic soft rejection can be assumed when that bears out, and you don’t hear back.

And since it was an email, it was probably just a bot, anyway.

I hope that wasn’t the real name of the firm you sent it to. They track stuff like that.

Many places keep all applications for up to ten years. This provides evidence in case of a discrimination lawsuit.

The response is standard for an unsolicited application.

I would translate it as follows:

* Your submission arrived.
* Probably no one has looked at it much yet, but someone will, probably, sooner or later.
* They’ll let you know if and when someone looks at it and they think they might have a current opportunity for you. It might be a long long while even if what you sent was good.
* Even if they all hate what you sent, they’re not going to let you know that.
* Don’t call them, they’ll call you (or they won’t).

“Don’t call us. We’ll call you.”

@Zaku pretty much nailed it, but don’t give up hope. I applied for a job once and received a similar email. Heard nothing afterward, until, three years later, I received a phone call. “I’ve been meaning to call you” said the voice on the other line.

After a very belated interview, they hired me.

No point in applying for jobs. They never accept you. You must know people!

Reviewing applications for internship positions and hiring employees takes much longer than anyone thinks it should. I would not read anything into it except that they are acknowledging receiving your material.

Only time will tell if you are under consideration.

Probably a rejection, but not always. When I applied for my current job, they didn’t have any actual jobs for me listed, but asked if I wanted to leave a resume. I did that and got a call back about a month later.
