”....this is now a progressive position”

Please, don’t make a statement like that without some reference. It is not a Progressive position, and anyone who says it is, is making shit up.

And, who speaks for progressives? Because I am progressive, and they don’t speak for me.

thisismyusername's avatar

I’ll pick a random reference, but I’m now told that you can assign this position to the Democratic party because this is the representative. Opponents should leave the party.

zenvelo's avatar

That is not the platform of the Democratic Party. HRC is a, but not the representative of the Democratic Party anymore than you are.

And she would not assume the mantle of Progressive.

And since you are not a Democrat, why don’t you join a party more in line with your belief system?

thisismyusername's avatar

@zenvelo: “And she would not assume the mantle of Progressive.”

She’s a ‘progressive who gets things done’ (her words).

I’m not claiming that you support the death penalty, but the Democrats nominated her in 2016. This can’t be an unusual position here, right?

The 2016 Democratic Platform endorsed abolition of the Death Penalty. HRC disagreed with that.

Parties do not speak with a single unified voice. Sorry the world cannot provide you with ideological purity to fit your beliefs.

@zenvelo: “Parties do not speak with a single unified voice. ”

That’s great to hear. I was told that wasn’t the case in another thread.

@zenvelo: “Sorry the world cannot provide you with ideological purity to fit your beliefs.”

I’m for breaking up ideological purity, which I’m told isn’t allowed.

Anyway, interesting to hear that you don’t support the death penalty. Thanks for the response.

And, if you want to look at a goose-stepping party locked into a single view of a particular point of view then you need to look to the Republicans.

Rarebear's avatar

I am not a progressive. I am opposed to the death penalty as I think it is barbaric.

I support the death penalty, in certain cases. With terrible crimes, I like the (assuming they are 100% guilty in this case) person to rot in prison. If it’s something really, really bad, kill the piece of shit.

In the cases like terrorist attacks with mass casualties, I’d be OK to go back to drawing and quartering. Maybe such a terrible death would also be a deterrent. Like getting butt fucked to death, is probably really terrible. If you kill more than two people, death by butt fucking…

Would you support death penalty for a serial killer who have admitted killing 60 women ( I think)? He’s from Russia though and was a police officer who committed these crimes during his service. If that was the case in your country would you support hanging him? Here are some more details

I am not in favour of the death penalty and it has been 53 years since anyone was executed in the UK.

I don’t know for a fact, but I don’t think the death penalty is a deterrent to committing horrible crimes. Criminals are put to death in the US every year, yet horrifying crimes are still being committed.
On the other hand, I’m not happy supporting these hard core killers with three square meals a day and shelter for the rest of their life. Look how long Charles Manson lived in prison.
But at the end of the day, I can’t be for the death penalty. If just one person was innocent and was put to death, that is one person too many.

I am a liberal progressive, and I do support the death penalty. Not to be used frequently, but it shouldn’t be taken off the table.

I think the OP’s problem is that the original assumption is wrong and based on unsupported stereotypes.

That.

I’m a progressive and I support the death penalty. Life in prison without parole IS a death sentence. That prisoner WILL DIE in state custody when God, Allah, Jehova, the great Spahgetti Monster, or nothing at all decides the time is right.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Christian Independent with conservative tendencies and liberal beliefs- I do not support the death penalty. (Although a criminal here was sentenced to die yesterday and I cheered a little inside, based on the heinousness of the crime against a child.)

Not any more.

I don’t. Next question.

I support the death penalty but am not a progressive. I feel that there are those criminals that will never get rehabilitated, they have irreparably damaged many lives, and will never be safe to let out of jail. Whether you call it saving money or not being cruel by keeping them incarcerated for the rest of their lives, life without parole is worse that just getting it over with.
