Are there any hot tubs, Jacuzzis, spas, or whirlpool-type tubs that you can use saltwater or Epsom salts?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) January 13th, 2018

Everyone says this will damage the pumps or jets. Being a lover of the ocean, I have always liked the taste and feel of saltwater, its healing properties, and of course of Epsom salts. Is there any way to use salt or other minerals in a tub with jets?

I’m fairly certain that my parents have a tub with jets, and have used Epsom salt in it before. But I don’t know if they used the jets, or if they just got lucky…

Salt increases ionization. So. If the salt gets to any metal parts, it would be bad. If the mixture isn’t too salty, I don’t see how it could clog anything…

I’ll check in later, to see.

Maybe LuckyGuy, or AreYouKiddindMe might know. Shoot them a PM, to see if they’ll contribute some info…

If you have a hot tub with chlorinated water adding Epsom salts to it will produce a liquid which you really don’t want to sit in.

If the hot tub just has plain water in it you can add Epsom salts but you just need to flush the tub afterwards to remove all the residue so you don’t damage it.

^Good call. I foolishly assumed it was a tub in the house, because of the details…

Either in the house or on the deck. I’ve heard that you don’t need chlorine if you have salt, but that too much salt is bad. How much salt is bad for the parts, and how little is too little for antibacterial properties I do not know—all I know is, I like my water to be as salty as sea water

Well saltwater is corrosive, and those pumps and just have a lot of metal to them, so yeah, too much exposure to saltwater would be bad. It might be something you could get away with ever once in a while, but I wouldn’t do it often, and I’d absolute flush it out good with freshwater immediately afterwards.

Our pool at the gym turned from having chlorine to having some kind of salt solution. I imagine it was a special mixture. Your best bet would be to talk to some pool store type people.
