Up in the hollers of West Virginia “whar” is used in place of “where.”
“Whar is that dad blasted coon hound?”
Whar did you make the mistake at? Over yonder thar?
You forgot the L on the end, as in, “ i’ll give it a whirl.”
It’s from a 1970 song: “Whar, huh, what is it good for? Absolutely nuthin’.”
Originally a derivation of wharf, whar used to describe an unloading place that used to be on the water, but is now far from the water’s edge because of infill. The now useless pier is still used to store things while in transit, but is not in a position to load directly onto ships.
There is a misconception/folk etymology that it is related to warehouse, but in actuality it is because someone went to a former wharf and said “What the F!” and figured the F was superfluous.
That little floozie dancing around in nothing and trying to find rich men! She’s just a what, I tell you, just a girl who does it for money!
it’s obviously another of the penguin’s portmanteaus. This time a combination of what & where.
@stanleybmanly And it’s very hard to carry a portmanteau when you only have flippers!
It’s the past tense of confefe.
