Do you think Jim Carrey’s physical comedy is funny in Liar, Liar?

I’m watching it for the first time and Carrey’s constant antics really makes me cringe. I think he’s hilarious in The Mask though, mainly because it’s a role similar to the Nutty Professor, where his over the top character is in short bursts. Your thoughts?

It’s hard for me to answer. My taste has changed over the years. I use to like slap stick comedy but I’ve grown tired of it, and now it seems like lazy comedy. No real effort. I slip and fall and trip and bend and its suppose to be funny. It’s just lazy.
I never found him to be especially funny.
Always looks like he is trying too hard.
When I first saw the man, he was doing an interview, Tonight Show or something. I thought he was an attractive man. Then I saw him in a clip they showed, and I thought it looked like he was trying very hard to seem like an idiot.
It was cute when he was a virgin trying to avoid a vampire, but after that he went downhill IMO.
Liar Liar was a cute premise, but again, exaggerated to the point of losing my interest.
He would have been best spending his career in mostly romantic comedies.
He has said he started practicing making faces in a mirror as a child, and aspired to one day be famous for that. It is a shame he never matured beyond that aspiration. He has a lot of talent, but he buries it under a deep pile of bs.
He reminds me of Jerry Lewis in his slapstick over the top antics. The facial expressions and fake laugh don’t appeal to me.
“It is a shame he never matured beyond that aspiration.”
Have you seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show?
I thought the movie was great. Very funny. Not his best, but a good movie.
@rockfan, never even heard of them. Was he in them?
Yes. But they weren’t comedies.
I am a big fan of silent movies, so I do love physical comedy, but I never cared for Carrey’s over the top use of it.
That said, I think he is brilliant in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Man In The Moon.
I don’t like that style of comedy at all and I’m not a big fan of Jim Carrey.
Never been a big Jim Carey fan. Slapstick not really my style.
Okay, @rockfan, I am intrigued. I have ordered a copy of Eternal Sunshine.
Not too crazy about physical comedy in general. Rowan Atkinson is one of the best at it though. For example, This physical comedy bit is so much funnier than any Jim Carrey scene I can recall.
Also the whole promoting anti-vaccination bullshit sours my thoughts on the guy even more.
by the way, there is a documentary on Hulu called Jim & Andy. Really amazing.
That’s one movie I liked when I watched it for the first time. I’m not sure if I’ll like it that much now!!
I really don’t care for his comedy.
One time, on a talk show or something, Carey and another actor were trading digs. The other actor said, “That’s not true you over-actor!!” Carey just cracked up. So did I!
The Truman Show made up for any comedic crimes he has ever made.
I would definitely consider The Truman Show a comedy, even if it does have elements of drama
@gorillapaws Thanks so much for posting that video! I’m a fan of Rowan Atkinson but for some odd reason I’ve never seen that particular skit before. Just laughed extremely loudly in a very quiet library :)
Not a big fan although I can appreciate his craft. Interestingly an interview revealed his constant antics carried over to RL and caused failed marriaged. He cant turn it off, similar to some with bipolar.I saw him differently after that and enjoyed his acting more, reminds me of a young Robin Williams.
I just watched Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.
That is EXACTLY the type of characters he should have been playing, instead of Dumber.
Edit: I enjoyed the movie. Thanks for naming it. I had never before heard of it.
