How can I keep our cat from moving the water dish?

Asked by jonsblond (44333points) February 7th, 2018

Our two cats and two large dogs share a large glass bowl of water. We have one cat that likes to move the dish. It makes a mess.

I researched and found this. I’ve had many cats but none that ever did this.

How can I keep the dish from moving and making a mess? Any suggestions?

That cat probably male is territorial or threatened?
Give it own food/water dish/bowl.

I agree that the cat would probably like a non-dog water bowl, and might stop moving the other one if you gave it a water bowl someplace the dogs can’t/won’t go.

I suppose you could also glue or nail the other bowl to the floor…

I can try a bowl on an elevated surface? That might work. It’s hard to keep anything from these dogs.

Leave the toilet lid up. They will get water when they want.

Have you tried a very heavy bowl, or weighting it down somehow?

jonsblond's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 The dogs will empty it before the cats can even get to it. :D

@MrGrimm888 I haven’t tried that but it was first on my list of possible fixes. I can’t think of a way of weighing it down though.

Find a weight that is made of nontoxic metal, and you could put it in a preexisting bowl. Just a thought.

^Good idea. Thank you!

Sure. Good luck. Cats can be busy bees. Love the guys though.

I’m a cat person, always have been. :)

Can one bowl of water be put somewhere that only the cats can access it?

MrGrimm888's avatar

Cats can pretty much access anywhere.

@BellaB I’m trying to find a place to do that. That might be the best option for now.

Put the dish inside a used brake drum or brake rotor. Or glue it to the floor…

If you want to weigh the bowl down as simply as possible, a rock would work.

I’ve known many cats who didn’t like to share their water, especially with (slobbery?) dogs. A separate bowl – or even a drinking fountain – on an elevated surface might be appreciated. If you have a bathtub, that’s a good dog-free zone.

Glue it to the floor. The bowl, not the cat.

Alternatively, see where the cat wants to move the dish to, and put it there in the first place.
