As an adult are you ever, really, truly, bored?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23475points) March 13th, 2018

Or just putting off a job, or task you really don’t want to do?
As a homeowner I have never been bored, there is always something that has to be done.
I may not want to do it, but it is still there.

I’m 46 and can honestly say that I have never been bored.

Almost never. As a child I remember being bored sometimes, but as an adult I either very much appreciate having nothing to do, or I can always find something to do that I enjoy.

I think having nothing enjoyable to do creates boredom for me.

I think @JLeslie puts a good fine point on it. I can get bored doing “something that has to be done” (house cleaning comes to mind), so it’s not about having nothing to do (I like that sometimes) it’s about having to do something that requires just enough attention to the uninteresting that I can’t really occupy my thoughts with the interesting.

Only in certain social situations I am required to participate in and cannot escape.

So you define boredom in such as way that it’s invalidated by having a job or a task?

So can one not be bored with jobs or tasks?

I find that very hard to relate to, as my typical reaction to things I’d describe as jobs or tasks tends to be very compatible with boredom.

Almost never. I like to do lots of things, and some of those things take time, like reading and watching movies, and cooking, and walking with friends, and going to thrift stores (and not necessarily buying anything) and taking and editing and organizing photos, and going out to eat, and writing restaurant reviews, and planning dream vacations etc.

I honestly can’t figure out how people get bored. Depressed maybe, but bored, I can’t figure it out. Unless a person has no interests, which I guess is possible and would be a horrifying way of life, boredom seems like an odd feeling.

Yes, I had surgery a while back and it has decreased my mobility. Subsequently, I find myself suffering from boredom frequently. When I do, a lot of times I get on Fluther.
