Why does my dog fart when he walks up stairs?
Three steps, toot. Two steps, toot. Last step, toot.
This is something recent. About 3 weeks or so. He’s ten and in average health for his age. No change in diet or lifestyle.
It happens every time he’s walking ahead of me up the stairs. Right in my face. The nerve.~
Serious question but silly answers are welcome.

Like it says on so many packages: “Some settling of contents may occur.”
Possibly a change in the dog’s capabilities. It may have to use more abdominal muscles climbing stairs than it used to.
There’s also a possibility that the makers of your dog food changed an ingredient, that makes the dog gassy.
Another possibility. Maybe the dog has gotten into something, and it’s taking time to work it’s way out…
Farting is good. It means everything is functioning.
His gas has been brutal the past week. Bad enough to clear a room. I spend a lot of time covering my nose inside my hoodie.
@kritiper That made me giggle.
He probably farts going downstairs too but your face/nose/ears are further away and not subjected to his flatulence.
Personally, I am convinced that it is an act of age-relayed deliberate gross disrespect. He knows your face is right there, and he’s heard you say “Ew” and seen you hide your face in the hoodie.
I have never had an old dog that doesn’t do this.
And, oddly enough, there are no audible toots when someone isn’t behind the old dog…
@canidmajor If a dog farts in the forest and there is no one to hear it?
Excessive gas could be caused by a poor quality of food. Depending on the dog’s age, you might try a different, higher quality of food, or a type that relates to it’s age.
When my dog got old, the vet prescribed Science Diet Senior dog food, but that stuff is pretty spendy, so I used Gaines Cycle 4 (for old dogs) instead and the dog didn’t mind and the results seemed the same as Science Diet.
Some people feed their dogs whatever is the cheapest, and the dog’s fur will show the results of the poor food. (Rough, coarse coat.) I always fed my dog a quality name brand, like Gaines or Purina.
