Am I alone in writing with pen and paper?

Asked by Unofficial_Member (5107points) April 2nd, 2018

I like to write stories with a pen and paper so I tend to carry a regular notebook with me where I feel like to write. I have a feeling that this practice is outdated or old-fashioned as many people tend to carry electronic notebook with them. The problem is that the inspiration I got to write doesn’t seem to flow clearly when I stare at the laptop’s screen and I personally find it troublesome to have to type while thinking. The old style of writing is more for me but I see that writers these days use electronic devices to write. I know it makes it easier to edit or erase their work and such but will I get lots of disadvantages if I don’t follow this fashion of writing? Would that make me unadaptable in the future (in regards to professional world of writing)? Anyone here still write stories the ol’ fashion way?

This may not answer your question, but I draw comics and I still use papers. Same goes with my other, recent, more serious artworks.

But I go through 3 steps: pencil draft, inking, digital editing. I can’t draw things on the computer from scratch, and I can’t do effects like shading on paper. So the paper and the computer complement each other.

Also, my comic involves a narration, which I write on a notebook I carry around for adding to the computer editing later. I find this method incredibly helpful. The notebook acts as a rough draft. It creates a “this isn’t the final form” feel. I can write whatever pop in my head, then later when I type everything on my computer I can see errors and rooms for improvement. Maybe you can do the same with your stories.

@Mimishu1995 Thank you for answering. I still find the process of your work insightful nonetheless.

I absolutely hate typing.

Give me a moleskine. I do a lot of layout stuff for food money. Graph paper, ruler, and pencil. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

When I was in college I was going for economics and accounting. This was back in 2001. There was a dude with a palm pilot plugged into a keyboard. Everyone hated him.

Nope. Literally art, is art. Your pen your instrument…

No, you’re not alone. I find that my brain works differently at a screen & keyboard than it does with pen & paper, whether it’s creative writing, game design, programming, or art.

I have some difficulty sometimes concentrating and not getting distracted at a computer screen. (Especially if it’s hooked up to the Internet and has my password for Fluther or other sites stored…)

Certain types of writing I’ve gotten good at with a computer, but writing on paper is different. I sometimes go back and forth between them.

I’m currently studying medical coding and I learn best when I write what I learn. I have a huge notebook for writing notes. Nothing compares.

Pen and paper is not a lost art. You are not alone.

I was just reading an author’s interview who said they write only with pen and paper. Other writers have said that too. I don’t know if you are writing in English or another language but I think improving your grammar and writing skills and style are more important than the tools you decide to use.

Well, I used to write it on paper before transferring it to a typewriter. It is a different feeling physically putting your thoughts down. But I learned to do it on a word processor in the 80’s so I’m really comfortable with it now. I think I do just was well.

I can’t read my handwriting. So no.
