Why do Royals still exist?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29896points) April 8th, 2018

From a related Question.

Do they have any power, political or other?

Are the people they govern or represent paying their way to a glamourous lifestyle for no reason?

When I read your question, I thought you were asking about the baseball team in Kansas City! You capitalized the “R,” so that’s where my brain went.

They have social and cultural influence and value, effects in terms of publicity and endorsements and they tend to have some wealth which tends to come largely from the past (and the way our economic systems perpetuate extreme wealth), with some continued support from governments. They’re also part of historical traditions and national identity and they’re liked by many people.

When I read your question, and saw that you capitalized the “R,” I thought you meant Royal vacuum cleaners.
What royalty does depends on what country you’re talking about. The British royalty is just for show, unlike Arab royalty that rules.

“Do they have any power, political or other?”

Depends entirely on the country. In the United Kingdom their monarchy has pretty much no power or real authority anymore. In a place like Saudi Arabia the monarchy’s power is absolute.

It woould take a major upheaval in Britain to end the monarchy. (Think Brexit x 2.) There are folks in Britain who adore the Royal family and many who would love to see it abolished but it ain’t gonna happen.

At this point, the Royals can and do lend their cache to causes such as preservation of architecture, mental health, children’s hospitals, but their position is largely just ceremonial. In previous eras, the King or Queen had more power and Prime Ministers had to be approved by the monarch after being voted in by Parliament.

Breeding.

Why shouldn’t they? And why should it matter if it’s not your own country. Maybe it is; I don’t know you.

@MollyMcGuire I don’t have anything against them necessarily, but I’d think if the people are paying in part or whole, for these aristocrats to live a life of luxury, that may go away someday soon.

It doesn’t matter to me, but it’s a valid question while people starve and die from lack of medical care elsewhere in the world imo.

@KNOWITALL Not having royals will not feed people in another part of the world….this is akin to “eat you spinach…..children in Africa are starving.” :)

I am assuming that you know the UK is not the only Royals the world has.

I think it’s silly and outdated, at least. Irresponsible and frivolous.

If it’s not your country, your opinion is meaningless.
