Were you satisfied with Trump’s statement for Holocaust Rememberence Day?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) April 13th, 2018 from iPhone

This holiday (and I do think of it as a holy day, even though I’m not religious, and it’s not biblical) I think everyone should pause to at least think about the genocide that happens in the world, that it can happen to any group, and to show respect for those who lost their lives and lived in terror and mourning at the hands of what I call savages.

I just read Trump’s statement, and I wondered if people thought it was adequate, and also I noticed he ended it with saying “...the year of our Lord…” for the date, and I wondered if recent Presidents typically use that expression in statements, and I hadn’t noticed it.

Here’s the statement: https://www.google.com/amp/m.jpost.com/Diaspora/READ-The-full-US-statement-for-Holocaust-Remembrance-Day-549590/amp

I am glad that he mentioned the Jews this time.

To stay sane, I have to pay as little attention as possible to minor things that Trump says and does.

Pablum for the masses.

You can tell Trump did not write it, too many characters, too many “biggly” words, tand the word “sad” does not appear anywhere.

His daughter is the first Jewish member of a First Family, which is a statement in and of itself imo.

Plus this: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2016/11/20/trump-is-headed-to-white-house-did-just-elect-our-first-jewish-president.html

On a personal note, I agree it should be a day of thought from the people of the world. It wasn’t only Jewish men, women and children, but gays, dissidents, mentally and physically disabled, gypsies, and more. Frankly, I’d have waxed eloquent, but his statement is respectful at least.

*Days of Remembrance or other formal yearly commemorations often use the ‘official’ speech patterns year after year, even on a local level.

A “statement” completely negated by his frequent winks and nods towards the Neo-Nazi set.

@KNOWITALL Is ending “...in the year of our Lord…” for the date the official speech pattern? It just stood out to me since now it’s more politically correct to use the “common era,” or CE, for the year, if there is even any sort of clarification.

Not to mention the Jewish people don’t acknowledge Jesus as their Lord, but it’s not like I’ve never heard the expression before, and I’m not offended if someone’s uses BC or AD for instance, but I just wondered if that’s typical White House talk in the last 20 years, and I hadn’t noticed.

No it isn’t. It’s a nod to Evangelicals. I usually have only read it in Medieval documents.

”...The Holocaust, known in Hebrew as “Shoah,” was the culmination of the Nazi regime’s “Final Solution to the Jewish Question,” an attempt to eradicate the Jewish population in Europe. ...”

Really? I had no idea! It reads like an eight grade book report. Which is probably necessary to explain it to the dotard before he signs it.

In all seriousness, it’s a perfunctory statement which doesn’t say anything wrong.
I guess that’s a real accomplishment when they didn’t mention Jews last year.

In the end, Trump doesn’t have anything heartfelt to say, so I think a perfunctory statement written for him is best.

My second comment was addressed to JLeslie’s question above it. Sorry for not clarifying that.

@JLeslie This is the formal language used by the U.S. government for presidential proclamations, referring to the years passed since the birth of Jesus Christ (and the beginning of the Gregorian calendar).

@janbb I figured it was a nod too. I’ve only heard it used in documents written in “old English” but I wasn’t sure if I had maybe overlooked it in more recent documents.

@KNOWITALL I know what the expression means, I even mention BC and AD and that Jews don’t accept Jesus as Lord. I’m not sure why you might have thought I don’t understand the meaning of the phrase. Trump injecting the line there, when customarily not in presidential statements in the last, let’s say,, 30 years, seems very on purpose to me.

I asked the question though, because our presidents do say God Bless America, or God Bless The United States of America, at the end of speeches, which is kind of not really in line with separation of church and state, but I don’t think most people worry about it.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@JLeslie You asked if it was common, I just posted the link saying it was the formal language. I didn’t research which Presidents used it and which didn’t, but I could probably guess.

@KNOWITALL

Trump retweeting antisemetic memes from white supremacist accounts is a statement. His daughter’s choice of husband is not.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Darth_Algar Are you and @JLeslie reading something in my posts besides what I posted? Did I subliminally say I loved Trump because I re-read my two posts on this thread and neither defended him in any way. Facts, just facts.

Darth_Algar's avatar

No, I’m taking your words as is.

JLeslie's avatar

@KNOWITALL I didn’t get the impression you were defending Trump, not to worry. I just think maybe we were mixing signals, because your answer wasn’t quite answering the question I had in mind, and I thought maybe you didn’t understand that I know what the phrase means, so I clarified that.

I don’t think Trump is antisemitic, but I think he plays in the sandbox with antisemites, and for some reason he doesn’t understand how dangerous that is, and that you can’t really separate yourself when you actually help antisemites get stronger. My guess is he thinks he plays them like puppets on a string, part of his ego out of control thing.

If you go back many years ago you can find Trump in an interview, I think it was with Matt Lauer, where he specifically talks about something needing to be done about antisemites like David Duke. It’s bizarroland with Trump. WTH is in his mind I just don’t get it, but I think it’s dangerous.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Jleslie I completely agree. Look I’ve been around real racists, the nods and winks actually empower them, which is why I get my back up when I feel I’m being put in that evil box. If ya’ll knew my past, you’d understand why it’s so offensive. Peace.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Who ever is putting you in any box? We’re commenting on Donald Trump, not you.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Darth Good, kinda felt like you were being argumentative with me, we all know somethings off with him.

JLeslie's avatar

@KNOWITALL I completely understand.
