Could someone please explain the argument for pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal?

Asked by LostInParadise (32183points) May 1st, 2018

From what I have heard, the argument goes like this. Yes, the inspectors are doing a good job of checking for possible nuclear development, but the deal is going to end in a few years, which would allow the Iranians to build weapons then. So we should tear up the agreement, reimpose the sanctions that were not working previously, and allow the Iranians to build nuclear weapons now.

What am I missing?

Politicians want war.

1) Netanyahu is in political and legal trouble, and in Israel, the easiest way to escape legal issues is to start a war.

2) Trump and his cronies have said it was a bad deal 2 years ago – mostly playing to the right wing base that makes their money from armaments. Never mind that the stasis since 1979 hadn’t accomplished a damned thing.

The right wing is pissed off that Iran didn’t roll over and play dead. Like that was ever going to happen.

It’s the usual sleight of hand. Create an international incident to take peoples’ eyes off of domestic issues.

There is NO good reason to pull out of the Iran deal.

Trump doesn’t make coherent or consistent arguments. He just does things that are mostly horrible ideas, and says random contradictory nonsense about random topics.

What you are missing is that Iran is making some pretty impressive nukes NOW.
Our own intel community has verified this.
We’ve seen pictures, satellite imagery, hundreds of thousands of documents.

Why should we be bankrolling this?

@Yellowdog Iran is abiding by the terms of the agreement and no longer has a nuclear weapons programme.

A recent White House press release stated that Iran has an ongoing nuclear weapons programme. The White House later claimed this was a clerical error and the release should have stated Iran had a nuclear weapons programme. Perhaps this is what is causing the confusion.

They are building nukes now. Didn’t you get the memo?

I remember the last time such a claim was made, to justify an invasion. Turned out all that evidence was fake, and the claims a bold faced lie.

If by memo you mean Netanyahu’s recent presentation then yes I did get it. It seems it has nothing really new and is another attempt by the Israeli tail to wag the American dog.

The Iran nuclear deal is an Obama thing, so Trump needs to get rid of it (even if it is more or less working).
