Anyone else find it ironic when some people rail against having a black British actor (Idris Elba) to play James Bond, yet they’re okay with an American playing Bond?

I would agree. But other than the actor in the very first movie (Barry Nelson) who is American?

There is no reason a black person couldn’t play James Bond—especially in England where society is culturally more equal among African and Caucasian.

And yes—British is more important. But even an American or Aussie might be able to play a convincing Brit.

The controversy is like with the latest Orphan Annie movie, or the Equalizer movie. It isn’t that these roles are suitable for non-Caucasians but that the ‘character’ themselves is a sort of am archetype or iconic image in people’s minds.

Could Superman be played by an African American? Wonder Woman? Sherlock Holmes? Gomer Pyle? Oliver Twist? Peter Pan? Gandalf?

Of course they could. Its just not the image people have in their minds of the fictional character.

James Bond is contemporary enough that it shouldn’t matter, however.

Brosnan is Irish by birth, so it wasn’t too far a stretch.

I don’t look at color. I don’t listen for accents. I look for suave & sexy. Bond’s hotness factor is most important for me.

I personally don’t see any reason not to have a black Bond. I say this having argued on previous Q’s that sometimes I find it odd to have a real historical figure played by a different race. As far as Bond, I think it doesn’t matter at all. He can be black, white, Asian, I don’t think it matters.

I thought I was going to die when Sean Connery decided to retire as Bond. Since them there have been so many good Bonds that I don’t think his color should be a problem. Bond is an attitude…NOT the person

Somewhat related, but let’s consider how for a while at the same time a Brit (Christian Bale) played an iconic American character (Batman) while an American (Robert Downey Jr.) played an iconic British character (Sherlock Holmes).

When has an American played James Bond? Oh, Barry Nelson starred in the first version of “Casino Royale” in 1954. That was the first 007 film. I have not seen it. Oh wait, Woody Allen played Jimmy Bond in the second version of “Casino Royale” in 1967. I have not seen it either. James Bond is not black in the novels. Let blacks invent their own characters, rather than stealing from other cultures. I do not think Daniel Craig is James Bond, and Idris Elba or a female would be far worse. James Bond is described and his ancestry is given. There is nothing about his being black. I would never watch such a movie that had a black or female James Bond.

I can’t say that I have garnered much of my loose understanding of Christianity, from the liberal media. I was forced to attend bible study/Sunday (Baptist) school, as a child. Luckily, I wasn’t completely fooled. I had lots of questions, and eventually was able to stop going because my family moved. It’s certainly one of the most evil things about religion, that they try to indoctrinate ignorant children.

I don’t call it infantile but it is somewhat sophomoric. College students away from home for the first time often assume everyone else is stupid and that they themselves are intellectual giants. Perhaps this is because for the first time in their lives, they have heard something different and its cool to them. It is NOT acceptable among mature adults. Truly intellectual people can understand both or multiple sides of an issue and explain them to others without bias.
