Lawn guy broke off a sprinkler head. What should I do?

Asked by Aster (20028points) May 3rd, 2018

Last time he was here he was edging and a sprinkler head, one of those big pop up ones, was broken off (jagged edge) . What should I do or say? He’s nice and works very hard. I met his wife and I like her also but if I turn on the sprinkler system the water just shoots straight up into the air ! I’m also concerned he will do this again. Woe is me.

He needs to fix it—for free. It’s as simple as that. He’s is responsible. Fortunately, it should not be difficult to do.

Thanks so much! He doesn’t speak English; I guess I’ll have to write it down and then not understand his reply !

Please let him know. He will fix it for free. I’m sure. A sprinkler head is cheap – only about $3 – $4 at Lowe’s.
I’ll bet he has a few in his truck.

Yes, have him fix it. If he does like I do, he’ll fix it so that it won’t happen again. (I should never have to fix one since I don’t do anything to break them. But I did break one once and left a note telling the customer that I would be back, on which day, to fix it, which I did. The one I broke was in some decorative red lava and a piece of the lava had fallen into the sprinkler body which kept the sprinkler head from retracting when off. I bumped the plastic head and that’s where it broke. Cost me $30 for the in-ground unit (Rainbird), no charge for time involved to drive across town to make the repair. But they were good customers and well worth the trouble.)

It would depend. If his service is cheap but he does a good job, I would fix it myself. If his service is expensive but I feel he goes beyond normal lawn work. Like he cleans up toys or things in the lawn and sometimes trims the bushes or pulls out weed in my flower bed and I don’t ask him too, then I would fix it. If he charges a lot for very little service, then I would ask him to fix it. You have to look at the long term cost.
If he is some one you wish to keep, I wouldn’t squabble over 30 bucks. But I would point it out to him that it was broken and ask him to be careful in the future. Also maybe get some long sticks to put up around the sprinkler heads in the future so he knows where they are. Maybe he didn’t see it.

He does an acceptable job; nothing to rave about. And I do pay him extra , like fifteen dollars to trim the shrubs. Fifteen extra to “weed” the flower beds but he doesn’t pull them up; he just whacks them with something so they don’t show above the ground. An edger or something gas operated.

Are you sure he has the skill-set to properly replace it? I mention this because my mom had a leak a few years ago. She paid to have it fixed and they still fucked it up. The leak was underground and how she found out it wasn’t properly fixed was by getting a 700 dollar water bill.

So while it might not shoot water in the air it might still leak hundreds of gallons a day into the ground that you can not see.

@Aster Then I would have him pay to fix it.

Find a friend who speaks his native tongue, who can do it
, ask him, politely for you!

I went out there and handed it to him and he acted like he was well aware of what he had done, showed me where on the grass he had broken it off and , with Spanish words covering most the the sentence I heard, “Home Depot . ”

Yep. they have them at HD as well as Lowe’s. Let us know when he fixes it.
