Could you explain the ending of the movie "Solace" to me (details inside)?

I mean, so what, colin farrell dies so the doctor takes its place in murdering innocent people who are sick (actually BEFORE they’re sick)? And, even then, how long can he perform such job? I mean, he’s quite old, isn’t he?
