How much do you spend on your pets?
A recent post made me wonder about this since many Americans are obsessed with their pets.
How much do you spend on pet products, grooming, food, etc…per month?
Second, how much WOULD you spend if it was a life and death situation?

My tapeworm is quite self sufficient.
^^ you need a banana and a cookie.
I need you in my belly. Get in my belly.
For my two cats I spend about $25 per month on food including special treats.
Yearly vet checkups cost me $160 (for both cats). That doesn’t include flea treatments and prescription medications as needed.
For surgical procedures I’ve gone a ltiile over $1K twice to buy my 2 geriatric cats a few months of life. I learned from that. It just prolonged their suffering. From now on I won’t pay nearly that much for a very elderly cat.
Between two birds and two dogs, my pet store visits are around $80 every three months. Then you have once a year vet visit plus flea treatment for the dogs, Usually $100 vet, another $50 for flea meds. That’s about it.
As far as cost, that’s a hard one. I probably would cap it at a grand, too, like @gondwanalon.
Looks at goldfish. A few bucks a month. However I did spend a lot upfront. I buy filters and stuff in bulk.
November 2016 I bought 5 feeder goldfish for 7 cents each. Three are still alive. I have spent over 1K to keep 3 (21) cents worth of fish alive. No regrets!!
@johnpowell My feeder goldfish turned into huge carp or something, looked like monsters! haha
Just food and the occasional vet call.
Gosh…the life or death thing would so depend on how old the dog was. If the dog was 15 years old and got cancer….I’d just make him comfortable.
If it was a young dog, 3 or less, then I might spend $1,000.
Like @johnpowell I keep fish. Besides preventative stuff like keeping the water clean, there isn’t much you can do in the way of medical care for fish. By the time they’re visibly ill they’re probably beyond saving. I’ve euthanized a fair number of my fish.
The fish themselves are a few bucks apiece at most and a $3 thing of food lasts me for months. But I’ve probably dropped several hundred dollars on tanks, filters, bubblers, driftwood, live plants, and various supplies such as water conditioner, fertilizer, etc. It’s a beloved hobby. I see the aquarium as both a habitat for my pets and a work of art for my home.
I spend 65.00 a month on food and about 20.00 on snacks. Anywhere from 200.00 to 350.00 per year on shots, flea and tick medicine. That’s quite a bit of money, but you have to expect it when you own a pet. Luckily I haven’t had any medical issues with her yet. About 3 years ago I got a post card from my vet saying I needed to bring my pet in for a “well pet visit”. Hell no! I’m not giving any more money to my vet so he can have a huge house . What a racket!
Oh, and probably the most I would spend in a life and death situation is about a thousand dollars. That’s really pushing it though because I don’t like to charge more than I can pay off each month.
In regards to my dog, not enough. It’s impossible to pay her for her unconditional love. I give her that back, and usually spend around $30 a month, for food, and stuff.
At her age, I would have to think hard about a surgical procedure, or big health issue. Decisions I’d rather not even think about.
If I had the money, I’d spend any amount to care for her. But there’s reality. Reality sucks…
@MrGrimm888 Best Answer, only because it mirrors what most of us would say (I believe) when it comes to saving a pet, any amount would be paid if we were rich. :)
No pets. No plans to change that.
