Are you willing to drink cockroach milk?

Asked by LadyMarissa (16302points) May 29th, 2018

Back in 2016 experts discovered a cockroach that births its babies as opposed to laying eggs & feeds them just like female animals. Her milk is protein rich & now companies are trying to sell this cockroach milk as the next superfood!!!

It didn’t go over well in 2016 but they are now trying once again in 2018 to get everybody healthy by drinking cockroach milk. I don’t care how healthy it is or what it “might” cure, I don’t see me joining in on this trend. Are you ready to drink cockroach milk???

I would try it. I’ve tried raw milk, all milk substitutes in my area and enjoyed them to a degree.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I would rather take a bullet.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@LadyMarissa – think of the employees who are working hard to extract that milk….

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Do they milk them by hand,or machine??

flutherother's avatar

Thank you, but I think I’ll pass.

chyna's avatar

I just threw up a little in my mouth.
No.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Pretty sure that’s what we got in public school…

I honestly don’t drink cow milk but maybe twice a year.

stanleybmanly's avatar

no thank you

anniereborn's avatar

How many cockroaches would it take to make one glass a milk?

gorillapaws's avatar

The body can get all the nutrition it needs from a healthy, well-balanced diet. Hard pass.

ragingloli's avatar

Get rid of the roach, and we can talk.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

“We have no evidence that it is actually safe for human consumption,” Subramanian Ramaswamy, the lead author of the study, said 2016.

Yeah, no. I’ll pass.

And echoing @gorillapaws, I roll my eyes at “superfoods”. I know people who are always excited about a new life-changing food or pill or exercise. It’s weird.

Eat vegetables and fruit, moderate the meat and fat, limit junk food, and you’ll be fine.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Not pure, but added to an Energy bar. Maybe.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Not of my life depended on it!

ragingloli's avatar

@ZEPHYRA
What about dog milk?

LadyMarissa's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I agree whole heartedly!!!

LadyMarissa's avatar

@elbanditoroso I don’t plan on applying for a job as a cockroach milker either…EWWWWWW!!!

AstroChuck's avatar

I wasn’t aware that cockroaches were mammals.

filmfann's avatar

Cockroach milk would be rich in protein and disgust.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 They don’t tell us that bit of information & only say that their milk will be rare & difficult to obtain. Actually, for me it doesn’t matter as I have NO plans to milk one of those nasty creatures whether it’s by hand or by machine. Even IF it’s by machine a hand will need to connect it & I can promise you that IT AIN’T GONNA BE MINE!!!

johnpowell's avatar

No real problem with it. And I am a picky eater.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ragingloli hahaha, seems to be a general consensus that dog milk has a horrid taste.

www.quora.com/Is-there-any-health-benefits-of-drinking-dog-milk

LadyMarissa's avatar

@MrGrimm888 You drink it more often than I do

LadyMarissa's avatar

@anniereborn I’ll NEVER know…And, PLEASE don’t come back to enlighten me IF you ever find out!!!

ZEPHYRA's avatar

NOT any kind of milk! Never had human milk, barely drank cow’s milk at an infant stage and after that NEVER again!

LadyMarissa's avatar

@gorillapaws I agree. If the docs told me I had only 2 seconds to live & the only thing that would cure me was cockroach milk, I’d kiss everyone goodbye!!!

LadyMarissa's avatar

@ZEPHYRA I don’t care for milk either!!!

LadyMarissa's avatar

@ragingloli I bet guys love you & I can’t fault the way you think!!! ;)

LadyMarissa's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 Now I have to cross energy bars off my list of things to eat!!!

flo's avatar

Is this like the Yanni or Laurel thing?

Darth_Algar's avatar

Not to be overly pedantic, but if it gives live birth doesn’t that make it a mammal, not an insect? And if it’s a mammal then doesn’t that make it not really in the cockroach family?

tan253's avatar

What? A cockroach that gives birth to live babies and feeds it like a mammal yet is a cockroach? Isn’t that kinda amazing?!

Why drink the poor cockroach milk… bloody hell HUMANS – leave animal milk alone!

tan253's avatar

Oh ok, just read it, she does lay eggs but then she sticks them back inside her until they hatch – yep I just said that.

imrainmaker's avatar

As per the news people have suddenly become more courageous in 2 years and are ready to try anything new..) Also it’ll be guilt-free milk as per one company rep. That’s hilarious!! I’m fine with cow milk even if it’s 3 times less protein rich than roach milk/crystals!!

Patty_Melt's avatar

No-one possesses the physical strength it would require to get my mouth open for that.

Just guessing, but maybe the way they milk them is just to shake them real hard, like catsup. Or, human mommies drip when they hear a baby cry.
Maybe somebody tortures the babies.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@flo No this has NOTHING to do with Yanni & Laurel

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Darth_Algar I was so grossed out reading this that according to @tan253 I missed the part where they lay eggs, reinsert them & then wait for the to hatch before nursing them. Yes, I agree with you that they should be mammals; but I guess it’s more profitable to call it a cockroach. I don’t care what they call it, that bug looks gross & I have

NO intention of drinking anything coming out of its body!!!

LadyMarissa's avatar

@imrainmaker I don’t care for cows milk; but I’ll drink it before I’ll even try cockroach milk!!!

chyna's avatar

Now I have acid reflux from reading about this. Maybe if I go drink a glass of milk…um, on second thought, no.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@tan253 The whole thing sounds outrageous to me!!! I was so grossed out at what I was reading that I missed that she lays eggs & then unlays them in order to wait for them to hatch. That does NOT entice me anymore than milking a cockroach!!!

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Patty_Melt I promise that I won’t be trying to force you to put that nasty milk anywhere near you!!!

LadyMarissa's avatar

@chyna Thanks for the best laugh that I’ve had all day!!!

If it’s in a product/meal and not stated clearly on the ingredient list then surely most people wouldn’t mind. Companies are allowed to use various terms to describe their product’s ingredients no matter how technical/misleading-like the terms to common ears. Instead of putting the words “cockroach milk” on the product label the company could simply use the term “milk protein”. Instead of telling the customers in restaurant it’s a “cockroach milkshake” you can simply tell them it’s a “milkshake” (most people will assume it’s the milk from cow).

I personally wouldn’t mind as long as the efficacy of the milk itself really has a tremendous effect. I care about the nutrients in food and so long as it’s sanitized, organic, and nutritious then I’m good with it (however, I would never consume the milk directly from the source).

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Unofficial_Member I can tell you that I will NEVER order another milkshake without asking the source of the milk!!! I don’t care how healthy they try to convince me it is, there are just some things NOT passing my lips!!!

Cows milk directly from the source taste a millions time better than after it is processed for consumption!!!

jonsblond's avatar

It would negate the healthiness of the milk but can I dip an Oreo in it?

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Aethelwine Oh YYYUUUUUCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

If drinking that kind of milk is the pinnacle of health, then just let me die.

imrainmaker's avatar

What would you do if you find out icecream you just enjoyed contained roach milk..)

MrGrimm888's avatar

Maybe I could consume it, with Frosted Roach Wing Flakes. They’re grrrrosss…....

flo's avatar

Hoax.

Unofficial_Member's avatar

@LadyMarissa I was referring to how most people will act in a given situation. Maybe you’re conscious about the food you eat and ask the employees about the ingredients they put inside but most people would trust the food they ordered without asking something like what type of cheese used in the cheesecake, is it cream cheese, organic, non-gmo, fresh from the farm, etc.

To tell you the truth, most people really wouldn’t mind what they eat so long as they don’t know what they eat/have good assumption about the food. If you have ordered, suppose, a strawberry milkshake in a specific restautant and asked about its ingredients, the next time you ordered the same thing you probably wouldn’t ask about the ingredients anymore and for next one and so on you’ll cease to ask as you’ve trusted the menu (unless you’re really looling forward to be seen as a paranoid person). If in such given situation the restaurant decided to replace their cow milk with cockroach milk then the customers will ended up drinking cockroach milk anyway. The restaurant can legally do it as long as the cockroach milk has been approved by FDA as safe for consumption.

The “milk” I mentioned in my earlier post was cockroach milk. I wouldn’t want to drink directly from the cockroach.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@imrainmaker I think people would be surprised to learn exactly what is in most consumables.

flo's avatar

@tan253 I suppose it’s a joke, ...but where did you read: ”... she does lay eggs but then she sticks them back inside her until they hatch.”

NomoreY_A's avatar

This is a joke, right? Disgusting thought. I’d rather drink mouthwash.

flo's avatar

Of course it’s a “joke”.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@NomoreY_A & @flo It’s NOT a joke. I posted a link in my description after doing a lot of research. It was originally on NBC’s 5:00 pm news. I thought it was a joke so I did a search & found numerous reports. The link in my description will take you to CBS news report.

Let me rephrase my first sentence…IF it’s a joke then way too many reliable sources are reporting on it!!!

flo's avatar

@LadyMarissa I’m not referring to the news articles but the actual facts about cockroaches feeding their (offsprings, whatever they are called as soon as they are hatched)

LadyMarissa's avatar

@flo Actually that tidbit of info was on a yahoo news report which I neglected to link. I’m sorry, but since Verizon took over yahoo,I’m not sure how reliable their news stories even are so I opted to only list the reliable sources!!! IF you still want to read more about it, google the words “cockroach milk” & there are tons of reports on it. I’m sure one will go into greater detail!!!
i think this is it

flo's avatar

@LadyMarissa But that’s an article out of many I guess, of the story. But where is the basis of it?

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Mitchboy1995 I agree.
