Should Roseanne's character be killed off instead of canceling her show?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24948points) June 1st, 2018

Like Charlie Sheen’s Two and a Half Men? That way everyone gets to keep their jobs?

Well, the show is named after her, so probably not.

I don’t really think “should” applies in this case.

I just read they are discussing a “spin off” centered around Darlene.

Patty_Melt's avatar

It kinda creeps me out, how quick she was to suggest it.
Makes me think of a kid peeling out at daddy’s funeral to be first arrival at the reading of the will.

Per news reports, ABC executives are bouncing around the idea.
Of course Gilbert is interested, she was making big money. Also by shutting down the show, over 200 people are without jobs.

No difference to me. I didn’t watch it in the first place.

However, if they keep the title (Roseanne), I imagine Ms. Barr gets some income out of it, even if she is not in the show. That would bother me.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@elbanditoroso Maybe she can agree to put proceeds to charity.

ok! ready for the latest? Roseanne has now retweeted the accusation that Michelle Obama was instrumental in her firing. Michelle supposedly leaned on ABC to dump her. Don’t ya just love it?

The problem is that the show’s title and character’s first name are the same as the actress’ first name. The producers would not want that association, even if they were not required to pay for using it. They could change the name of the character and the show, but I don’t think that has ever been done.

Patty_Melt's avatar

They don’t need her name for a spin off, which is a new show loosely based on some other, previous show.
They can name the new show whatever they want.

I would love to see a different guest star (male or female) play Roseanne on the show from here on out. That would get great ratings, and be lots of fun for everyone guessing who was going to play Roseanne’s lart each week.

I read somewhere that they are thinking of a spinoff called “Dan”. The entire cast has a contract that ABC is obligated to pay whether they work or not. ABC claims it is costing them millions to cancel the show!!!

I don’t care if they call it “Dan”, “Darlene”, “Connor Family”, or “Roseanne’s Dead” I think it would still be a good show. Roseanne claimed all the glory because the show was named after her; but, without her supporting cast, she wasn’t that interesting!!!

Brian1946's avatar

I wonder the reaction would be, if she showed up at an NFL game, and “sang” her version of the “Star Mangled Banner”. ;-o

LadyMarissa's avatar

Surely nobody will give her the chance!!!

Some may not be old enough to know, but the show was based on Roseanne’s stand up routine.
It was she who started the label domestic goddess for housewife. That skyrocketed her popularity, and prompted thoughts of a show.
Over the years she kept reminding us all she is an average human, faults included, but she has always looked after her cast and crew like family.

I think she made a mistake she is sorry for.
As people age, we tend to brain fart more frequently, and sometimes say things we have no idea where it came from.
I think for everyone to jump ship after all she has been for them…
John has a career on his own, but Tom would never have gotten a movie with the governator if she had not given him visibility on her show.
Look at the full cast. Aside from John, how much success could any of them claim without her?
Personally, I don’t count henhouse chat shows.
Going on with, or without her, either way, I think the cast is wrong for being so quick to dump her.

Until Tom met Roseanne, he couldn’t get a job cleaning toilets at McDonalds!!! IMO she was a great comedian UNTIL she met him & I feel he drug her down!!! After she met him, she just wasn’t as funny as before.

I’m not so sure that the rest of the cast has dumped her. She’s put them in a bad position & unlike her they can’t afford to be jobless. Plus they are still under contract to ABC; so, they will parrot what ABC tells them to say until further notice!!! They will also be paying Roseanne quite handsomly for the buyout of her contract.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

UPDATE: She ( Roseanne’s character) might be killed off and the series will be called The Connors from now on.

LadyMarissa's avatar

The Connors (working title at this point) will premier this fall & supposedly Roseanne will have absolutely NOTHING to do with the show…not even financially!!! It will strictly be the supporting cast & they’re not telling as yet how Miss Rosie will be written out!!!

Strictly speculating, Tom Arnold could receive financial gain from the show & then share with Roseanne & CBS would still save face!!!

Patty_Melt's avatar

Tom and Roseanne are not on good terms.

No way will I watch a show casting people who would throw their greatest benefactor under a bus.
The only way I would give it two minutes of my time is if they kill off Roseanne and Darlene both, maybe in a car accident together.
Whatever Roseanne is like on her own time, the show spent nearly a decade covering numerous controversial topics, mostly from the viewpoints of average Americans.
She went to bat for every member of the cast at various times.
In order to portray a controversy, somebody has to take the roll of asshole. Many times it was her.
When your very livelihood depends on how well you deliver barbs and shady angles, why couldn’t that spill over into one’s banter sometimes? She doesn’t have to believe something to say it, she is accustomed to throwing stuff at a sounding board and see what kind of reaction comes back.
She has been struggling with her health for sometime, and there have been comments about bipolar.
The whole fucking world came at her with torches and pitchforks without a moment’s hesitation to consider she may be battling some condition which ought to be met with compassion and concern.

Bunch of stinking back seat judges.

Right or wrong you get a GA for that fierce defense of a pariah. I don’t know one way or the other whether she’s worthy of the effort, but you’re a pit bull in her corner.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Thanks for that.
I’m no personal acquaintance of hers. My only reason for being upset over the whole thing is how rapidly the hate came at her from all directions.
I have known elder persons who have said and done things that later they can’t account for that behavior, or even sometimes remember.
People have been too quick to judge an old woman who has done a bunch of good in the past.

@Patty_Melt I love Roseanne even with her ability to be as crass as they come!!! I had made a bet with a friend that the show would be off the air before the end of the season because her brand of humor is no longer considered funny. Now days people “look for a reason” to be insulted & her brand of humor was created by insulting people so nobody would need look very hard to find a reason. It actually took her longer than I thought it would to become persona non grata,

Over her career, I could always find a way to justify the obnoxious things that came out of her mouth; but, she pushed the envelope a bit hard this last time!!! I find it sad that she worked so hard to support equality over the years & she chose something so racist to choose for her swan song!!!

I, for one, would have continued to watch the show with her in it because I really feel that she’s NOT as racist as her mouth made it sound. Still, when she chose her words, it did make it extremely difficult to support her!!! I did NOT spew hatred toward her; however, I also could NOT defend her; so, for once, I kept my mouth shut. I still love her & would love to see her perform again, it’s just that I can find NO reason to demand her return!!! For me, she will be missed.

LadyMarissa's avatar

Roseanne apologized Does it make a difference???

Patty_Melt's avatar

Nope.
They are going ahead with “The Conners”, and she gets no money, no part of it.

It will be lame, and last no longer than the reboot did.

stanleybmanly's avatar

You never know about these things. The premier show is guaranteed to draw a record crowd, and it will be interesting to see the innovations minus any influence from Roseanne.

Kardamom's avatar

It’s not true that Roseanne gets no money. Quite the contrary. They had to buy her out of her contract, so she’s making a shit ton of money for not acting.

I am one of those people that are really bummed by what she said, because it was blatantly racist. Also, I had always assumed that she was a liberal democrat. Roseanne has always presented the liberal democratic viewpoint on her show, especially regarding women’s rights. That’s why I was so upset to find out that she is a huge Trump supporter, and made this ugly tacial comment.

Although I think she is one of the best, and funniest comedians of our time, she fucked up royally, and it easn’t a mistake, or a mis-quote. It makes me feel like shit, because she had always (seemed) to have supported everything that I believe in (until now).

She obviously loves and supports her TV daughter, Sarah Gilbert, who is a lesbian, and a bluer than blue Democrat. She had had people of all walks of life on her show. Her “fictionalized” geandkids are a biracial girl, and a gender bending boy. I just assumed that she was totally OK with all of that. And she might be, but she also clearly has a racist/mysogynistic streak in her too, and that really upsets me.

The network had to dismiss her, but I’m hoping that she will surprise us all, in some unforseen and dramatic way, and right this fuck up.

In the meantime, I think all if the actors (and the writers) from Roseanne are top notch. I anxiously await the premiere if The Connors and hope that they are able to pull it off, and that Rosie, herself, will be able to do some soul searching, and eventually be able to surprise us all.

LadyMarissa's avatar

As I’ve said before, I have seen Rosie hit what appeared to be rock bottom & then reinvent herself. The difference was that her fans had always been able to support her transgression. This time she pushed it a little too far & even her supporters are feeling put off; so, she’s going to have to do more work than in previous situations!!! Even with my love for her, I found her apology to lack heart & feel she’s going to have to do a lot more before returning as a fan favorite!!! Maybe she will be allowed to do a cameo on The Connors???
