What are your thoughts and opinions on dash cams?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23475points) June 14th, 2018

My cross shift put one in the transport last year, and now I am sold on them.
Since then I have put one in the wife’s suv ,and one in my pickup.
Peoples driving has gotten so bad you need them to show people what they did because most times, the average person doesn’t believe you when you tell them what they did.
What is your opinion of them?

I can understand why you endorse them. If someone handed me one, I would probably use it, but so far, I feel no compulsion to buy one.

I don’t have one & for the expense I’m not sold on the idea that I actually need one. I’m not sure that I’m smart enough to install one & even less sure that I could learn even more technology!!! Of course, I didn’t think I needed a microwave oven nor an Instant Pot until I got my first one. Now I can’t imagine living without either; so, IF somebody offered me one, I’d say “Thank you”. Live & learn!!!

Last November a policeman stopped me because he said I ran a red light. He was right behind me, and I KNOW I didn’t run that light. If I’d had a dash cam, he wouldn’t have even considered inventing his story.

I like them but don’t have any myself. I know someone that has them in every vehicle, mostly due to his perceived mistreatment by LEO’s.

I wish I’d had one several years ago, when a police officer ticketed me for having ignored a stop sign.

I had done no such thing; the stop sign is at the end of the block where I live, about 3 houses away, and I use that intersection several times each day. I had stopped fully and legally. But, it was my word v. the police officer’s lie, and guess who prevailed.

I got some revenge, though. When I went to court, I made a special point of publicly thanking the officer for treating me so fairly and courteously. The judge was impressed by my good manners. The policeman gave me a meaningful look and knew exactly what I was doing.

I like the idea. I’ve been looking to get one for a while. Unfortunately the longer I wait, the more features and better they get. That makes me want to wait even longer. And they seem to get less expensive by the month!
I want one with low light capability, cloud connectivity, and motion sensing so It can be used for documenting a break-in at night.

The two I bought were regularly $130.99 and went on sale for $49.99 .

seems to be ok for what I want.

I do enjoy watching dash cam video compilations on youtube. They are excellent examples of how accidents happen.

And people don’t believe me when I say ,peoples driving is getting worse and worse every year, shit people don’t even pretend to drive any more.

I wouldn’t mind if they were standard. As long as there is no tracking of me, or viewing of footage without my permission.

Cameras have become a mental illness for people. I don’t subscribe to the camera life myself. I’m free.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

So when someone does something stupid in front of you,and has the the cops believing them and not you, cameras are a mental illness?
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could calmly state but officer that is not what my dash cam caught.

MollyMcGuire's avatar

Yes, people’s obsession with cameras is a mental illness…..whether they are taking pictures of crashes, simply invading others’ privacy, or sharing their beautiful desserts or Fido’s cuteness, it’s obsessive and mental.

@MollyMcGuire I sorta agree with you to a point, but dash cams are to protect you, like I stated in an above post that you obviously didn’t bother to read..
Posting what they ate for lunch, snapping selfies, and so forth I agree(I know shock) but dash cams are meant to protect you in the advent of a crash that is not your fault, but you probably won’t bother to read this either and go on some kind of rep/con rant.

Ah ha!!! I read it. Gave you a great answer point too. :)
