Does your cardiologist test your thyroid?

Asked by JLeslie (65790points) July 3rd, 2018 from iPhone

Even if it’s just simply putting TSH on your blood work, and not a more comprehensive thyroid panel.

I’m annoyed this new cardiologist I’m seeing won’t test mine. My other cardiologists always did.

I am already a thyroid patient, so it would just be for monitoring not diagnosing.

What cardiologist? I don’t have one.

It would be unusual for the cardiologist to test your thyroid since you are already a thyroid patient with a PCP. Cardiologist probably thinks that portion of your health concerns are taken care of and doesn’t want to do double testing, nor does he want you to go through double testing and paying for tests you have already taken. You may be okay with having your thyroid tested multiple times a year, but most patients will not be.

^^ I flagged my first post. Realize it was unhelpful.

@chyna I’m not wanting double testing. I see my tests on my phone/computer, no need to repeat anything if not necessary. My thyroid affects my blood pressure and heart rate, which my cardiologist was treating. Your thyroid directly affects your heart, especially if thyroid levels are way off.

I’m just annoyed that I need to go to another doctor to just get the blood test, when it’s really all connected. Plus, my other cardiologists always tested it. Not that they treated it, I’m not asking her for thyroid medication.

My medical doctor does that blood work annually. The cardiologist orders an ultrasound of the carotid every few years. If he doesn’t I do by mentioning it.

BTW, when I first moved here I wanted to get a carotid ultrasound before the end of the year but couldn’t get an appointment with the cardiologist, who does them in his office. I called the hospitals and an imaging center looking for an alternative. The price for (both sides) the ultrasound was around $300 outpatient at the hospitals and $66 at the imaging center. It’s worth checking around. My former company, through whom I am insured, provides a price comparison service for us that we may use if we choose. I never have.
