Is this how the US treats Canadians now....see link in details?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23474points) July 4th, 2018

This is getting ridiculous, the US is becoming a very scary place for anyone not a Yankee.
Is the US trying to isolate itself from the rest of the free world?

I think that trump is just playing hardball trying to make a profit now to pay off the $21 trillion debt. He doesn’t want to subsidize world peace any more than the United States can afford. Give it 6 years and we will go back to being friends with each other again EDIT. I watched the video. In Canada and most of the world you need a international drivers license. Lesson don’t ever commit a crime in anothet counrty. No speeding. No ripping off posters in North Korea.

johnpowell's avatar

That is fucking absurd.

Please people from Canada. Buy nothing that says “Made in the USA” and do not visit.

Beat the shit out of our wallets.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@johnpowell I have no record of any kind, and I am scared to set foot in your country if that is going to be common place.

johnpowell's avatar

And I would advise that you stay home until we can get this shitbird out of office. Please hurt our economy.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

This is how podunk police departments in the south treat everyone. It’s revenue generation and has nothing to do with Canada. You can’t trust the fucking cops here, sorry. This has nothing to do with America as a whole.

johnpowell's avatar

My point is valid.. Don’t roll the dice my lovely Canadian friends.

Go to Cuba instead. The food is better there.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Now…I love a good Cuban plate but some proper southern BBQ puts it to shame. While the cops are dicks it’s almost worth the risk for a dose of brisket and collards. No, the food is not better in Cuba. Jamaica possibly though I’ll give them the cigars. Topping off a meal of Carolina BBQ with a Cuban cigar and some Kentucky bourbon is like the culinary fucking trinity.

@RedDeerGuy1 A valid Canadian drivers license is legal down there, it was pointed out at the end of the video, if it wasn’t Canadian commercial drivers would be ripe pickings for these red neck cops.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I didn’t know. Thanks for the info. All I have is a driver’s license. Sponge Bob square pants would get a driver’s license before me.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I do agree if she was speeding then give her a fine for it, but the rest was total bullshit,it’s getting beyond stupid.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Cops are just people, many are awesome and some should eat shit and die. You never know which you are dealing with.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Yeah. You never know what type of LEO you’re dealing with. Best to try and obey, and hope for the best. If something goes sideways, the civilian has the disadvantage. You just have to try not to give a reason to be stopped…(Like being black on a friday.~)....

Zaku's avatar

I watched the video. It’s police incompetence (I hope it’s just the officer, not a wider problem where she was), and it seems to me a case of the wider problem of how US thinking and police thinking has been going in recent years. Utterly wrong and stupid, it seems to me.

LadyMarissa's avatar

I didn’t vote for the bastard & I am sorry that he feels the need to be such a bastard. Please realize that most of the American population still loves Canada… he did NOT win by receiving the majority of the votes. Like many things he does, he cheated in order to become king!!! I know it doesn’t help, but I apologize for his actions & I’m doubly embarrassed by this situation. It should have NEVER happened!!! I’ve gotten afraid to even leave home because I don’t know what dumb ass rule he’s going to decide to invoke that will keep me from being able to return to my own home!!!

snowberry's avatar

Edited
I thought this crazy action was a way to get the state of Georgia – or rather that local sheriff’s office – money. I watched the video twice and there was no mention of any law Trump or anybody else set up to go after Canadians. Where did that come in? Are you all just blaming Trump because he’s president?

How about going after the state of Georgia and the way they allow or encourage their police officers to operate? It turns out they- the police and the jail people denied her the right to call the Canadian Consulate.

They broke the laws arresting her and putting her in jail the way they did, but you are blaming Trump who really didn’t have anything to do with it.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^IMO. The OP was deriving that nationalist, and separatist thinking has been encouraged by the current administration…

snowberry's avatar

If they are not held accountable for breaking the law then you might be right. Or not. It doesn’t necessarily follow.

This kind of nonsense could just as easily have happened under Obama or Clinton. I could name countless instances of corruption in government… In fact you can find it in any administration anywhere in the world. But now that it’s become national news it will be interesting to see if anything changes.

MrGrimm888's avatar

There’s a big difference. Trump is bragging to his base, that he is essentially targeting non-white Christians. There’s really no precedent.

snowberry's avatar

There was no mention of race or religion in this video. She’s obviously a white girl from Canada. Would it have been somehow different if it had been a black man from Canada? Sorry I miss the point.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Yes. You miss the point…

Trump is fomenting vitriol against other countries, as well. Some assholes are following his example.

Dutchess_III's avatar

They HAD to have thrown out the charges. I’m going to see if I can find the written article so I don’t have to listen to the whole video….

Dutchess_III's avatar

Nield said as of April 27, the judge dismissed the case and ordered her records pertaining to her arrest to be deleted. She said the county wrote a check reimbursing her for bail.”
Source. Insane, and I am so sorry.

snowberry's avatar

These people can’t think that they’re actually going to profit from this behavior. I seriously think it was a misstep on the part of the policewoman.

LadyMarissa's avatar

IF the situation was reversed, would you have seen it as a misstep??? I think NOT!!! Had you driven to Canada & the same thing happened to you, you’d be outraged & rightfully so!!! They’ve reimbursed her the $900 bail but have thus far failed to reimburse her the $200 towing fee for illegally towing her car.

Deflection works best when not in agreement.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@LadyMarissa ..the Canadians don’t have an asshole as their leader. That’s the only trickle down effect there is around these parts…attitude.

snowberry's avatar

My husband runs a business. Lots of times employees have taken it upon themselves to do things that he did not encourage and would not have allowed had he known about it at the time. After the fact, he has had to take corrective steps, change policy, refund money, discipline or fire employees, on and on.

And yet people always assume he’s the one who had the idea in the first place. After all he’s in charge, so they blame him. Yes he was in charge and he’s responsible, but that doesn’t mean he thought it was any sort of a good idea. Nevertheless gossip and people being what they are, always assume the worst about him. It’s a lousy job, and no, he’s not an asshole.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I never once blamed ole orange hair for this event, but he is responsible for this kind of behavior, rep/come and dem/libs should have come fourth immediately condemning this event but neither side did.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Dutchess_III I can’t even argue your point!!! I can’t even justify the County that this occurred in because they should be qualified to do their job. According to the video, the law clearly states that Canadian Driver Licenses are recognized in the US & since we have ALWAYS had a good working relationship with our neighbors to the North, I tend to think that this is true. I know from friends who travel to Canada frequently, keeping a copy of the passport on the cell is a common practice to protect the vital originals while traveling.

Any company that I’ve ever worked for would have fired any employee who didn’t understand their job any better than this officer did. Even Starbucks did a retraining under the current political climate. Maybe the State of Georgia should follow their lead!!!

snowberry's avatar

@LadyMarissa exactly! Time will tell.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@LadyMarissa So much had to so with the fact that it was in the deep south. And that is their whole world, being racist. They aren’t particular who they’re racist to. It’s a crazy mentality.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I don’t accept labels but can say I’m the most unpolitical person you will ever meet. I’ve always made it a habit to vote for the person & NOT the party. Since we sadly have a 2 party system…in my lifetime,I’ve voted 50/50 as far as party lines go. In my opinion, the Oval Office sets the tone for the rest of the country & I cannot agree with the tone set in this country. I could not come to the defense of this young lady because I hadn’t heard about it. In this case, the press has let me down!!! Even Fox & Friends kept this one quiet.

At this point, all I can offer is a sincere apology from the State of Georgiia & the citizens of these United States!!!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Thank you @LadyMarissa , on behalf of all the Canadians I know we accept your apology.

MrGrimm888's avatar

With all due respect, I’m not going to apologize for some cop in Georgia. Anymore than I expect SQEEKY to apologize for a Canadian LEO.

I’m sorry that a third of our country causes me shame.

I don’t know about politics in Canada, but Canadians should fill their government representative’s mail box with disdain for the current administration. Keep the heat on. I think they would love to dish it to Trump. If enough citizens are behind them, the Canadian government can be more aggressive.

LadyMarissa's avatar

Nobody was asked to apologize. I just felt that as a citizen of the US who also happens to live in Georgia, that an apology from somebody is warranted. The Oval office isn’t going to do it, Cook County isn’t going to do it; so, as a taxpayer, I feel it is my obligation to be civil in these uncivilized times!!! Squeeky has NOTHING to apologize for as I feel the Canadians have shown a lot of restraint after being attacked for NO reason!!!

I live 300 miles away from where this occurred & yet I’m labeled a racist simply because I live in the same state where this occurred. It doesn’t matter that I’ve spent a lifetime fighting racism. I’m guilty for simply being born in a state perceived as racist. And for that I also apologize to me for the sudden ignorance in this country!!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I am sorry too.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@MrGrimm888 I am no way blaming all Americans for what happened to this Canadian woman, your country as well as mine has many, many great kind wonderful people, just ole orange hair has brought a great many dirt balls out from under their rocks, and that makes me freaked out at the thought of ever visiting your country.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Agreed. I think we’re on the same page here. I know you didn’t ask for apologies…

LadyMarissa's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I was born & raised here & I’m now freaked out about living here!!! I see good people turning into strangers. People I have known & loved all my life I don’t even know anymore due to their sudden switch in ideals.

I’ve never been much for traveling; but, there is NO way I’d leave the borders of this country right now out of fear of never being allowed back home!!! Actually, it has become so bad I even fear crossing state lines for much the same reason!!! I’m concerned for our future & even more concerned for the spillover to other countries!!! I can’t blame you for not wanting to come here. I can only say that it makes me sad that you can’t feel safe visiting here!!!
