Is the company "Groupon" really named after the mustard "Grey Poupon"?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33578points) July 6th, 2018

Something I read suggested that Groupon didn’t really come from “Group Coupon” but was from “Grey Poupon” – lifted from that old commercial where one Rolls Royce stops next to the author and asks if the other passenger had any mustard.

Seems flimsy to me, but not utterly out of the question. Have we been played with?

No, that is the kind of folk etymology that arises from people seeing similarities as connections.

No, Groupon from group coupon is much more logical.

I agree with the others, but it should be pointed out that the ad campaign was extraordinarily successful. Did you even know what grey poupon was before seeing it?

@LostInParadise – I’m a Guldens Mustard aficionado – (spicy brown) link

but you’re right, the Poupon ad was definitely memorable.
