What can one put on their resume if they don't have any education or work experience?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) July 6th, 2018

Most places these days want a resume.
What can one put on their resume if they have very little schooling or work experience?

For me personally, I graduated high school and went for a semester at a two year college. I held a steady job at a bank for eight years a very long time ago. Other than that job, I haven’t held a job since. Nor do I volunteer anywhere. These things I’m sure won’t impress any employer.

I feel I’m young enough to still get work, I’m in my late 30s, and I’d like to soon before I get too old.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I’d tell them I’ve done a little bit of everything and a whole lot of nothing.

Just list all your education and any work you did do.
What kind of job are you trying for?

You can pick up great references and work experience doing volunteer work. In fact when I ran my cleaning business I often donated my services to nonprofits. Doing that got me several well-paying jobs by the philanthropists who helped support that nonprofit.

It’s a great way to start out.

Unemployment is very low now so employers may not pay much attention to your resume. Put down what you’ve done and state that you are eager to work. But be prepared to shine when get an interview. Look sharp. Be alert. Be on time. And practice answering the typical interview questions. Be persistent. Be positive and never give up.

Good luck!

There are a lot of web sites that can help. Do a search for My first resume.

Lots of jobs count life experience. For instance, if you have ever had to take care of someone with disabilities or long term illness, raising children is a good background for problem solving.

Include specific skills which are a part of your personality. Are you good with people? If you are, say so. If you go to a meat packing plant and tell them you have a cast iron stomach, that would help you.
Do you have a friend who won’t let anyone but you do their hair?
So, search yourself. What makes you good that might be missing in others?
Math?
Immune to natural toxins?
Apply stage makeup 20 years for fun?
Curiosity for everything and love searching for answers?

Typing ability. Computer literacy (and specific software – do you know how to use word processors, spreadsheets, or anything else that might be used in an office?). Filing ability. You seem to have correct writing ability in English – I expect you could proofread things. Can you handle a phone system? Fluent in any foreign languages?

Whatever job type you are applying for – you can read the description and then explain why you think you could do the job well.

Personal qualities: Attention to detail, honesty, integrity.
