In your opinion do you think Trump's trade war, will help or hurt the Republicans come November?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23425points) July 9th, 2018

How do feel the Republicans will do?
With this glorious trade war their wonderful leader started.
Do you think it will help, or hurt them in the November midterms?

There is no right or wrong answer since all I asked for was opinions, weather we agree or disagree, doesn’t matter I just want some opinions on this.
THANKS!

I am hoping everyone votes democrat.Trump is an idiot. I can’t believe my fiancé voted for him but I still love him.

KNOWITALL's avatar

I think it will help. Even if he fails, he’s purportedly trying to get the US better trade deals, which is all most voters will remember.

I think, for some of his voters and/or followers, this quote of him still holds true (or truth).
No matter what he does, no matter what his actions will bring, some will blindly, stupidly, ignorantly, keep on following and voting (for) him.
By the way, I do think that we have these blinded, stupid followers of leaders on either side of the spectrum.

He is not getting better deals only more taxes/tariffs to pay for his “Wall”. The farmers, union workers, veterans and people on fixed incomes are going to trash the Republicans in the fall. The “one percent” he trying to impress don’t have enough votes to stop the “flip”.

Trump negotiates to put someone out of business, sometimes in the past his companies went bankrupt because of this and sometime he put the person he negotiated with out of business. This time the losers (people put out of business) will be the USA public. They will remember.

In the short run, I think neither, or it may help the Republicans somewhat because those policies make him look tough, and hey, America first, right? His supporters would like it, initially. Since the wheels of the economy move slowly, no large effect will be noticed before the Nov. elections.

But in the long run, I think that Trump’s policies will hurt the economy and then it will be a different story.

@2davidc8 It is going to hurt the soybean farmers this year before the elections. I live in an agricultural area and they are already grousing about the drop in prices for their crops. They’ll be harvesting starting in October.
They may not make back the money they have invested in seed and time, let only that, but harvesting costs make it a loss.

China has more to lose and will probably come to the table to negotiate. The markets sure don’t seem to care and probably because like me most investors don’t actually think it’s going to hurt much if any overall in the short-term. We’ll have to see how it plays out long-term. I don’t see much hurt for Republicans. I see a whole lot of meh.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

China could call all of the bonds they hold, $1.19 trillion . That would work, USA paying cash to China for the USA bonds.
China has less to lose than you think, we have entangled our economy with all the world and now Trump wants to become isolationist, without looking at consequences. We are all on the same row boat and Trump wants to blow a hole in the bottom of the boat; just to show them who is boss (not him) !

2davidc8's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Thank you for that. But I think that that will not sink into their minds before November. It will take time for them to really feel it and make that connection.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

The farmers in North Carolina are feeling it now and the rest of the country will feel the impact by the end of Fall (early November).
I’m waiting for some of the Republicans running this Fall to start saying “Not my President” j.k.

Trump has sky high approval ratings amongst Republicans. Nothing will.really hurt him. In large part because he will simply lie about the trade war, and call facts fake news. His sheep will nod in compliance.

The real question is will the country hold the GOP responsible, and boot them out in swarms.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@MrGrimm888 people will start to hurt and feel the impact in 3 to 5 months.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Yes. But that’s not the question, really. Will Trump’s supporters be capable of seeing the negative effects as a result of Trump’s policies, versus whatever he tells them?..

SQUEEKY2's avatar

As some said he already kneed the soy bean farmers in the balls with this, they are out already brazil, and Russia will make up what the US was selling China, guess that showed China who is boss.
The US cheese producers sell a crap load of cheese to Mexico, for the short term these producers are going to pay half the tariffs, but they can’t keep it up for long.
The Pork producers just took it in the balls for Trump.
Are the American voters really that dumb?
Has Trump actually said what he wants out of this?
Does he expect those countries to cow down?
The US is a huge economy, BUT it isn’t the only economy there are other countries that want to trade.
I hope the voters realize that, I hope the republicans realize that.
Just another note, Trump’s daughter Ivanka, not one of the products her companies sell are made in the US,NOT ONE, and shock, her products are exempt from her Dads tariffs, gee that was swell of dear ole orange hair.

2davidc8's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 “Are the American voters really that dumb?” I hope not, but yes, I’m afraid so.
Remember who put him in office. Even if you believe that he somehow dishonestly sneaked in, if the election hadn’t been that close, he wouldn’t have been able to pull it off. There were enough people who voted for him.
@Tropical_Willie Even if they start to “feel the impact in 3 to 5 months”, they won’t make the realization in 3 to 5 months. The light bulb won’t come on in time.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@2davidc8 I am afraid you are totally right.:(

I do not know who this “General Tso” is, but he sounds a lot more honourable and trustworthy than El Presidente Orangután.

My guess is that Trump’s trade war will cost the GOP a ton of votes come November, but the extent of the cost is impossible to predict. Trump runs a considerable risk that his slap dash approach to trade policies will blow up in his face, and the elections are better than 4 months away. That’s a lot of time in which the fuses he’s lit with individual countries can detonate major explosions. The GOP Congresspeople amount to little more than sycophantic toadys stitched to Trump’s coattails, and November results will be viewed universally as either an endorsement or rejection of the orange imbecile. The truth is Squeek that the collection of negatives around the fool is so extensive, that this one will be virtually lost in the pile. Here’s hoping he can drag his toadys behind him on his trip down the toilet.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Thanks @stanleybmanly would be nice for your country and mine if they got flushed away, but we will see.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I only pray that it hurts him. But there is just no predicting any more.

MrGrimm888's avatar

It doesn’t seem to have much point, other than Trump appearing to be a powerful jerk. But it’s the posturing with our allies that truly confuses me… Unless Trump really is a puppet of Putin’s.

Many of Trump’s strategies are ridiculous/unrealistic, but they show that he is trying to “put America first.” This trade war seems like going “all in” in poker. If nobody folds, and our hand isn’t as good as we think, we’re going to take a “yuge” loss.

So far. It seems like all that’s coming from this, is other countries learning to play without America…

Have any of you heard of Smoot and Hawley?
Think Trump ever heard of those two?https://www.barrons.com/articles/mr-trump-meet-smoot-and-hawley-1530915864

Trump knows NOTHING about the history of his country, though you would think somebody in his crowd of toadys would give him some hints. But then again, he’s not big on taking advice, probably because he doesn’t know enough to determine good advice when he hears it.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Well if ya don’t learn from history you’re doomed to repeat it, problem in Trump’s case it seems the whole freaking world is doomed to repeat it, because one ignoramus was to stupid to learn the damage it did the first time around.
