What happens if the U.S. pulls all its troops from Germany?

Asked by zenvelo (39546points) July 11th, 2018

There are a lot of articles about pulling US troops out of Germany, and a poll shows Germans are in favor of saying auf wiedersehn to the US. Apparently Trump was surprised at how many soldiers are based in Germany, and is in favor of pulling them out.

What do you think the ramifications would be?

Putin will be happy!

Yellowdog's avatar

It won’t happen.

That young US serviceman who gets shot fighting ISIS dies in transit back to the US because we no longer have an army hospital close by (relatively) to take him to. But I guess Trump likes troops who don’t get shot.

The less troops the US has anywhere, the better.

Is Putin getting his money’s worth? Withdrawl from Germany would be a big step in the dismantling of NATO, and now that Trump is anticipating his upcoming summit with Putin, he is busy ragging Germany for not pulling its weight. Little insight is required to appreciate exactly which nation would rejoice over any diminishment of NATO. We should pay close attention to the Putin/Trump summit.

Hopefully we would confiscate all the nukes they are storing here.

Putin will seriously consider annexing more land and property. He has no reason to stop at Crimea. He’ll take the whole Ukraine. Followed by Bellrus, Latvia and Lithuania.
He knows no one will stop him.

intelligence and electronic counter measures will cease.

Belarus, Latvia and Lithuania are all members of the EU. Perhaps it’s time to take a war into the borders of the US, so they can feel the real effects of what they have been perpetrating on others, and now, by negligence, wishing upon others.

I can’t imagine that eastern Europe would find this comforting. They may have to get used to seeing Russian tanks…

Making Russia Great Again

Yellowdog's avatar

All Putin has to do is turn off their energy. Seventy percent of Germany’s energy is from Russia. Most of eastern Europe relies on Russia for energy or other resources, and will not make a stand against Russia.

Nothing happens.

Yellowdog's avatar

Seriously, everything I’ve seen is suggesting that Germany is more favorably inclined towards Russia than they are towards the U.S. and, furthermore, Germany would never take a stand against Russia because they are energy-dependent on Russia, and have even made a deal about a pipeline that is sort of the basis for what Trump is miffed about. They can make multi-billion deals supporting Russia but won’t support their share of the NATO deal even though they are the biggest economy in Europe. I don’t think Germany wants our help or aid.

But voluntarily pulling out of Germany I don’t think will ever happen.

Germany is not in the “splash zone.” They would not be a part of the first few waves of the Russian army, which would clobber Eastern Europe, maybe even with the American troops…

I would agree that Germany seems more inclined to work with Russia, than the US. Such are the ramifications, of Trump’s foolish diplomatic endeavors… We will likely see many more deals being done without US involvement/benefit, as Trump destroys all ties in trade/defense with our pre-Trump allies…

I think Obama is the one responsible for getting our allies’ defenses from Russian invasion down. I know Poland had to remove their missile defense system.

All of the towns and cities where American soldiers hang out will suffer a huge drop in business.

Once Trumputin finalize their non-aggression pact shortly, there will be no reason to keep American troops in Germany or indeed in Europe in general. All these troops who are sitting on their buttock eating bon-bons can then be repositioned for an attack on Iran where they can actually earn their pay doing what they are supposed to be paid for.

In Germany proper, there will be some initial economic discomfort because of the loss of monetary input both directly from the troops and providing for the supplies and support of the military structure but their economy is fairly strong and they will survive and thrive, once again becoming the European powerhouse.

Old bases can be either converted to additional housing, airports, sporting venues etc. which will also assist in the economic recovery from the loss of US dollars. Another possibility will be the renting some of these bases to the Russians for their military purposes.

American tourism is also likely to decrease both because family will no longer be visiting servicemen who are now in the Iraq staging area and this decrease is likely to persist as the US isolationism policies intensify.

This US isolationism will come on quickly because it is actually favored by all sides. In the US there will be an attitude of not needing to visit other parts of the world because they are not us, beneath us and don’t deserve us or our money and the rest of the world will be happy to accommodate us and have us stay home and keep our noses out of their business.

I see Trump and Putin kinda on opposite poles as far as Germany is concerned.

Isn’t the German coziness with Russia and the American opposition to this what this is all about? If what you are saying is true, Trump would be glad to just let Russia have Germany, which I understand it already does.

Trump is trying to get these other nations to pay into NATO and stop cozying to Russia and relying on the U.S. taxpayers to support NATO.

ragingloli's avatar

NATO is nothing but a tool for the Colonies to project their global military hegemony.
The Orangutan just wants others to pay for the Colonies’ imperialism.
And he hates the russian pipeline, because he would prefer to sell us your dirty fracking oil.

stanleybmanly's avatar

@Yellowdog So is Putin getting his money’s worth?

Yellowdog's avatar

He’s obviously gotten YOU sold.

snowberry's avatar

—Loli’s Out of date. There aren’t any countries called “The Colonies” anymore, except in her head.—

ScienceChick's avatar

@Yellowdog Obama revamped and updated the missile defence plan from Bush. He didn’t abandon it. Sites were still installed in Poland and the Czech Republic.

RocketGuy's avatar

Are they blaming Obama again?

Yellowdog's avatar

Poland certainly does.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Fuckin Obama. Diabolical!!!!

Yellowdog's avatar

Obama nixed Poland’s Nuclear Defense shield against Russia

He didn’t want to offend Russia with it while trying his ‘Russian Reset.”

But Russia’s okay as long as Obama/Hillary or Merkel are making deals with them, right?

stanleybmanly's avatar

yes that’s why Putin wantsTrump in office. Because Obama and Hillary are so friendly with him.

Yellowdog's avatar

Obama and Hillary WERE friendly with him.

We are still curiously lacking any evidence that Putin preferred Trump. If there were ANYTHING, don’t you think that information would be all over the media, considering everything else that sweeps the nation’s media?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Yellowdog do you speak Ruskie, if not learn it quick?

Trump will declare it is the new language for Christmas this year.

ScienceChick's avatar

No, @Yellowdog . That isn’t why Obama changed the plans. Again, there are still sites in Poland and The Czech Republic. He listened to advisers and they scrapped the unreliable system they were going to install and installed something that would be able to target Iran reliably. You need to stop listening to Faux News. Try the BBC or something more reliable and and less bent to the far right.

ScienceChick's avatar

((HINT)) Look what happens in 2013 while Obama is your president. Russia spits the dummy.
