Did Trump really cut the Queen off?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) July 15th, 2018

I’m no fan of Trumps but in the videos it looks to me like the Queen dropped back then stepped behind him, and then he stopped.
What exactly did he do so wrong in this scenario? Was he walking too fast? Was he not paying attention to her subtle cues?

Do you have a link to the video?

He has the class of a wounded bull moose.
And meeting with an elderly Monarch in her country wouldn’t you let her set the pace?
Plus he totally insulted her when he showed up late for tea.
Insulted Englands prime minister to her face.
The guy is a total class act, NOT!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes @Brian1946 . That’s what I’m basing this question on.
I agree, @SQUEEKY2. He’s an asshat. But dealing with this one issue it rather looks to me like she just fell back, then stepped behind him. He didn’t move in front of her. It sort of looked like she wanted to move around to the other side of him, but there wasn’t room, plus he stopped dead so she damn near ran into him.
And I read, in the BBC I believe, that he wasn’t late for tea. He was right on time. But when I try to look it up again all I can find are the less trustworthy mags saying that he was late.

Would we put it past that crafty Queen to deliberately help to make him look clueless (not that he needed any help)? I mean, she’s checking her watch, which leaves everyone assuming Trump was late.
She falls back, and steps behind him, which opens the door to everyone screaming that he stepped in front of her!

Here @Brian1946. Sorry. I thought you asked if I had seen the video.

This time his nibs simply outran the queen. It is as if he forgot she was there. This was a minor flub on his part HRH fell in behind him. You can actually see her sidestep to do so. She gives the appearance of ducking behind him to avoid being seen or photographed with the poor booby. You really have to admire the tolerance and restraint of nations everywhere for bending over backwards at sustaining some patina of dignity to Trump’s ox-like attempt at international diplomacy.

Trump kept the Queen waiting for a good ten minutes before he showed up which is inexcusable as these events are choreographed down to the second. Later Trump revealed details of the private conversation he had with the Queen which is against royal protocol.

During the inspection of the guard Trump looks as if he’s striding down the fairway of one of his golf courses leaving some frail old lady trailing in his wake. All in all it showed a lack of respect on Trump’s part.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I have heard otherwise @flutherother. I heard he was right on time.

I agree, he’s a jerk. But it still looks like she stepped behind him.

@Flutherother

The arrival of the Queen
the playing of God Save The Queen,
then the arrival of Trump in the procession of vehicles,
Trump getting out of the Limo,
and the playing of the Star Spangled Banner

The Queen and Trump greeted each other

Everything right on cue.

How could Trump keep the Queen waiting? Do you think he just drove up there in a Mercedes? I fail to understand how people can attempt to spread misinformation on such a major broadcast event.

flutherother's avatar

@Dutchess_III @Yellowdog I think you are right. It seems the Queen arrived early and then waited for Trump who appeared right on time.

Yellowdog's avatar

Well, they played God Save The Queen in that interim. I assumed it was planned, as the Star Spangled Banner was when Trump got out of the Limo.

I agree, however, that Trump clearly was waaayyy out of decorum being in front of the Queen at ANY point. It would seem unthinkable for most people to walk ahead of the Queen, no matter how they fell in those positions.

flutherother's avatar

Yes, Trump arrived right on schedule almost to the second.

chyna's avatar

I don’t know. In looking at the clip @Dutchess_III added, it seems almost as if the queen is pointing at him to go on in front of her.

janbb's avatar

^^ It’s hard for me to imagine that protocol would allow that.

Dutchess_III's avatar

From what I read she is explaining where he needs to walk. Rumor has it that he wouldn’t take a practice walk because he knows how to walk. I’m really not sure about any of this. Hope we get to hear from the Queen herself.

@janbb I agree…I think that would be simply unheard of.

janbb's avatar

She’s far too classy to say anything about it.

ucme's avatar

Nothing to do with Trump, nor protocol.
The sad truth is that QEII is, well, how can I put this delicately?
Well past her sell buy date & basically loses the plot frequently nowadays.
She had no idea where she was leading him & so kinda gave up :D

SQUEEKY2's avatar

^^ Does anyone know where they are going with Trump?^^

janbb's avatar

@ucme How is it being reported in the various UK papers? I specifically mean the walk, not the whole visit.

ucme's avatar

As far as i’m aware & I don’t read the papers, it’s not gotten a whole lot of attention.
Main talking points have been the demonstrations/protests, big fuss over nothing for me.

I am really glad that we still have The Queen and that she is as well off as she still is physically and mentally,. England just seems more Matriarchal, as a society, and when she is gone it will be a major loss and new era for the U.K. thinking of the original Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria, etc etc, Her Majesty is the culmination of British royal lineage and succession. She epitomizes all things British. You Brits are really fortunate to have a true Queen.

Dutchess_III's avatar

They were examining the guards or something @SQUEEKY2.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I saw the video, and it does look like that, but he should have let her lead anyways.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, he was. She suddenly changed pace and stepped behind him unexpectedly.

Aster's avatar

So glad I saw this video again. The Queen motioned for Trump to go forward but he walked too fast at first which left her behind. It almost looked like she wanted to walk behind him which is , of course incorrect.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, she definitely moved in behind him. I guess we’ll never know.

Aster's avatar

Maybe in your nineties you don’t care anymore about such small things.

Dutchess_III's avatar

She cares deeply about Royal Protocol.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I know some very elderly people and when with them I always let them set the pace, But Trump has no class, he thinks the world should follow him and grovel at his feet.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I still think she dropped back…

SQUEEKY2's avatar

That might be true, but he should have taken that as a cue and slowed way down and still let her lead.in my opinion.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, he did stop. It seemed to me that she got a tiny bit confused or something.
