When Bush became President I thought it was a fluke. After Trump I’m not sure anymore. How desperate would the Republicans be next time?

They could go for some sort of centrist intellectual thinker, a person with depth and gravitas, and someone who could lead with some historical perspective and appreciation for America.
But they won’t. They’ll go for some rabid religious right-wing populist, because…they never learn. They tend to choose the politician that, short term, makes them feel good. Not the one that can lead the country.
The problem is that there are previous few centrist republicans any more.
