How long will poison ivy keep erupting?

Asked by janbb (63219points) July 25th, 2018

What I first thought was the fleas again turns out to be poison ivy. My initial exposure was probably last Wednesday. I have worn the shorts I was wearing then again so it seems some oil might have been on them. I’m treating it topically but new sites are still emerging. Any knowledge on how long this should last?

Oh, dear. Hot hot water wash everything. It won’t keep erupting from one exposure, but if the urushiol is still on your shoes (can you wash them? If so, do.) it will re-expose you.
If it has grown in your lawn, and gets regularly mowed, the urushiol is everywhere outside now. It has been very humid and somewhat breezy, the oil transfers that way, also.

If you got scratched by a cut branch, the area around may continue to erupt.

When you come in from outside, wash off all areas that touched anything with cool water and Dawn (another Dawn use!)

Loud cursing will help to alleviate the itch.

Good luck, Little Penguin, this just sucks.

I’m pretty sure it is just from the border of the back yard and I don’t really go out there much at all – I sit on the deck. I was weeding out weeds from the English ivy behind the low fense a week ago. Washed my shorts and will wash them again; can wash the sneakers too.

If you walked in your house in those sneakers, you may have tracked in some oil as well. If so, spot cleaning the traffic track may help as well.

It will last as long as you keep scratching it.

I think it depends on your level of sensitivity. My wife is very sensitive to it, she usually requires a cortizone shot because on her a small outbreak spreads so quickly.

I have seen her suffer from it for over a week even after the shot.

And you better believe she washes EVERYTHING that might have even have been touched, clothes, bedding, shoes, my clothes, me… you name it.

I am not overly sensitive so handle most of chores that might involve it. Afterwards I have to strip down immediately, bathe and put the clothes into the washer. By themselves, nothing else is allowed with possibly contaminated clothing and they all get at least a double wash.

According to Dr, Rolling Coasters, avoid nocturnal slumber, don’t engage in frivolous activity, and use about a quadrillion gallons of analgesic astringent:

Late at night while you’re sleepin’, poison ivy comes a creepin’
You’ll be scratchin’ like a hound, the minute you start to mess around!
You’re gonna need an ocean, of calamine lotion! ;-0

Wow, one of my favorite concerts was when Earworm City opened for Broo Springsteen, and that’s no BS! ;-o

It can last up to two weeks. More if you keep getting re-exposed.

My BFF is allergic to Poison Ivy. All she has to do is be outside while it is growing & she gets it. You’re blessed IF you’re not itching & scratching!!! Washing your clothes & shoes in hot water should help. As I pointed out in your Dawn Q yesterday, washing the affected area with the blue Dawn should clean off any oil you may have on your skin & Dawn will also help to dry up the blisters that you do have. Should slow it down pretty quick!!!

Don’t use anything that has alcohol in it. It will just dissolve it and spread it around. READ THE LABEL!

Get some Jewelweed soap and wash with it everywhere. It really does work. I’ve used it for years and it’s wonderful! Instant relief! https://altnature.com/order.htm The lady who makes this soap sits in poison ivy to harvest the jewelweed.

M,about a week. Hot baths and baking soda to at least alleviate the itch. My son has a God awful treatment that he swears will clear it in a day, but it sounds like torture to me. Let me ax him what it is again and I’ll get back to you.
