What have you avoided eating because it has been too hot to use the oven or stove?

Asked by Kardamom (33494points) July 25th, 2018 from iPhone

It has been really hot here for about 3 weeks. Today is supposed to be the hottest day of the year.

Three weeks ago I wanted to make a cake for a friend who had done a big favor for me, but it was too hot : (

I ended up making him lunch, several homemade salads, and a sandwich and some iced tea and brought it to him. He was very pleased, but I really wanted to make a cake for him and his wife. I will still do that, but later.

What have you been wanting to make, but have avoided due to the heat?

On a side note, I had also been wanting to make some homemade chili, so I got up at 7:00 am, while it was still relatively cool, and cooked it, and put it in the fridge and had it for lunch. Using the stove at that hour wasn’t too bad, but I didn’t dare turn on the oven.

Right now, this minute, I’m avoiding putting my stampot in the microwave.
The use-by date is today, so I should consume it, but it is a very moist 83 degrees here, and stampot is a winter dish.

I’ve been wanting to roast a chicken, but no go in this heat/humidity. I’m grateful that the supermarkets have rotisserie chickens.

I did manage to get eight loaves of bread baked and frozen before it got bad. I’m used to it here, it’s all about planning.

Pretty much anything that requires using an oven. If it can’t be microwaved, prepared on the stovetop or purchased and brought home it doesn’t get eaten.

Watermelon and cheese. Grapes. The witch from Hansel and Gretel.

I used to bake pancakes and watch ‘em rise. Now I just bake Turkey in my car,

@ragingloli Lol : )

@Yellowdog You cook watermelon and cheese and grapes?

@rebbel What is stampot?

Basically it is mashed potatoes with kale, or endive (raw or boiled), or spinach, and they are mashed again, or mixed rather.
They often come with a smoked sausage, or sometimes meat balls.
There’s also a stamppot (double P, I mistakenly wrote it first with a single one) that consists of, again, potatoes, but now with (mashed) carrots, and onions.
This one is called hutspot.
They all are mostly eaten during the cold winter months.

Things I’ve been putting off for now:
lasagne
cookies
banana bread
There’s lots more I could do in the oven, but these are the ones I’ve been sorry to postpone, which is what I understood you to ask.

I love salads and could live on them for a good while, but my husband is a carnivore. And one son goes vegan at the drop of a hat and starts putting nutritional yeast into things if I don’t watch out. So I have to walk a fine line. It’s a little harder without the oven, but we manage.

I do make an exception for birthday cakes. Our birthday season is June to October, and so there have been a lot of hot-weather cakes over the years. The trickiest thing there is not having the frosting melt down.

I have a surplus of chicken carcasses & bones in my freezer because I’ve been putting off making stock.

I roast chickens and chicken parts on the charcoal grill, so production hasn’t slowed.

OK, filling the stockpot now. Now that it’s on my mind, this is a good night to do it. I have a couple of hours of work to do on the computer. The air conditioning is on so it’s not not going to roast me.

Nothing. I have air conditioning and cook what I want.

Absolutely. I use the oven as little as possible in the summer.

Conversely, I will use it frequently, in the winter, as I rarely turn on my heater.

@Jeruba Omg! Ha ha ha, your line,

“And one son goes vegan at the drop of a hat and starts putting nutritional yeast into things if I don’t watch out” is one of the funniest things I’ve heard in awhile. Vegan humor, I love it. That sounds like a wonderful line from a book (that you should be writing) : )
