Why does this keep happening?

It has happened at least four times now. My iPod’s music and videos are deleted and no applications will launch. I have to restore my iPod every time it does this. Is there any way I could prevent this from happening?

Restore your iPod from itunes. you’ll have to resynchronize your iPod, but it’s better than it not functioning.

You probably have crap sync settings (synching to an empty folder, for example).

In order to be sure, you’re going to tell us what YOU are doing. Out of the box, iPods are pretty solid in all conditions except in the hands of “non tech” users.
