When is a time when you have used grade school or university math or science out of a class?

IRL? (In real life)? I wrongly used ! factorials when trying to determine my age (adjusted for time travel or epilepsy) . I used physics to get out of a fast flowing river that I fell in when I was 12. I went laterally instead of directly towards the shore. Sorta like the last ship in space invaders. You aim for where the ship would be and not directly towards the ship. Physics saved my life.

I use elementary math and science virtually every day.

I used basic algebra in my work as a pharmacy technician. When compounding.

I use math every day. Cooking. Considering rate-time-distance situations. Buying things. Thinking about the time of events during the day. Ever heard that “math is the language of the universe”?

I also use it quite a bit at work (computer programming, game design) and in playing and designing games and game worlds. Math tends to be a big part of those languages, too.

Constantly.

Every time I build a house or decorate a house I’m constantly using math for size of the room, kitchen cabinet placement, architectural details, it goes on and on. The floor plan often you need to know the scale. ¼ inch equals 1 foot, or 4 feet is one inch, for 4 inches is 16 feet, etc.

I use multiplication every time I need to leave a tip for a waiter.

I use multiplication to figure out discounts. 30% off of $200 I switch it around (algebra) to 200×7=140.

I have a spot in my back that I just had my husband measure so I’ll kniw if it grows, does that count? 11 mm by 7 mm.

Every time I split a recipe in half I’m dividing.

Calculating change owed to me.

Just the other day a doctor told me to keep my salt intake to less than 2 grams. Most salt in labels islusted in milligrams. I know the equivalent of what he said is 2,000 milligrams, but people who don’t, he was basically speaking another language.

How many hours will it take me to travel 120 miles? At 60 miles per hour it will take 2.

Figuring out the sales tax I paid when I only have a total number when doing my federal taxes. That’s algebra. I turn the equation around for figuring tax when you know the subtotal.

Sometimes we are doing math and we don’t even realize it, because some of it is used so much we know it more by rote, but if you had never learned math you wouldn’t know those things.

Like I said, I’m constantly using math, sometimes it’s very simple math, sometimes more complicated.

You use it constantly. You may not need to know quantum physics for everyday life, but math, you do. Don’t even try to argue it’s useless to learn it. Learn it!

Every student has tried to make this argument and it’s a loser.

I enjoy reading about math and science, but beyond what I learned in elementary school, I have not made use of what I learned in either. I wonder how many people here have made use of algebra.

I made use of it just to teach it!
