Does modern/abstract art appeal to you?

Asked by Demosthenes (15305points) August 13th, 2018

I’m speaking mainly of painting, but it doesn’t have to just be about painting.

I’m not an art expert, but I do enjoy a lot of traditional art, like Renaissance painting, as well as impressionism. I do have a thing for the surrealists too, Magritte in particular. I’ll admit that artists like Rothko don’t do much for me.

What are your thoughts on modern or abstract art? Are you open to it or do you prefer more traditional works? Does some of it seem like “anyone could’ve painted it”? Where’s the line between good abstract art and overvalued charlatanism?

Modern “art” has removed skill, ability, talent and effort from the equation. I have no use for this shit.
Take your piles of garbage, your random paint splashes on canvas, and your million soup can stencils, and GET OUT. Hang yourself with it, you talentless hacks.

Really, it makes George W. Bush’s terrible dog paintings look like Da Vinci in comparison.

True art has moved on to Rule 34. hmmmm

One must be willing to see all art as art to appreciate any particular type. (My father had a master’s degree in art.)

Well modern art encompasses many, many different schools. But as a generalality, yes. I far prefer it. Just as I prefer modern music.

I love Wolf Khan. Some of his landscapes are very close to color blocks and abstracts. I think he’s a genius with color. Then again, I’m no expert so art is in the eye of the beholder and all of that…

I like some things from all sorts of different types of art, whether it is classical, or contemporary, figurative, realistic, or abstract.

Art is art. Some is good, and some is not, and it all depends on your own perceptions.

Here are a few “modern” artists and art that I like:
