Have you ever accidentally activated the panic button on your vehicles key ring fob?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23474points) August 15th, 2018

I know most people have a bowl, or hook to put their keys on at home.
I have always have had them in my pocket, and once in a while the panic button gets activated, and my new truck just starts honking away.
This ever happen to you?
What did you do about it, I like the keys in my pocket so I am not going to change that.

Yes, once a month it seems.

Have you done anything about it, or just put up with it?

Ha ha ha ha!!! OK, this was in 1999 or so. I had bought a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix just a few months earlier.
One night I woke up in the middle of the night to someone’s car alarm going off incessantly. After several minutes I started to get pissed and got up to check it out….It was MY car’s alarm! I didn’t even know it HAD an alarm and had no clue how to shut it off. I’m punching buttons on my fob like mad, trying anything….when suddenly the car alarm on the other car in the drive way started honking and flashing!!! I almost jumped out of my skin!!!
I’m like, “Holy fucking shit it’s an alien invasion!!”
Then I realized my daughter was next to me with the fob for the other car, punching buttons, thinking that might help…it didn’t. (For the life of me I can not remember who the other car belonged to or where it came from…)
I was able to silence the other car, somehow, but ended up calling 911 because I had no freaking clue what to do (I have some idea now tho…that was my first experience with car alarms.)
At first they treated me like, “Silly empty headed woman!” and got all macho and condescending…..In the end, they simply disconnected the battery because THEY didn’t know how to shut it down either!
I walked to work the next day and figured it out from there.
That was insane. And…it was right at 4:20 a.m.

A customer pressed my panic button while I was working the midnight shift at a convenience store.

Yes, I keep my keys on a ‘biner on my belt loop and will, on occasion, lean into something and set it off. Usually gets 3–4 honks out before I can grab it and silence in.

Oh yes, and it’s annoying as hell! The worst is when the car is in a closed garage with the door down. It’s loud AND it echoes.

Many times. One time it was happening a lot, and I realized if I put the other keys on the ring in a different order it wouldn’t happen so much, and it took care of the problem.
