A slab of granite.

Granite is very durable, won’t mark easily, comes in many patterns, and is seen as a high end product. Granite is a natural product, some patterns are consistent across a slab, and some are very inconsistent.

Quartz, or quartz products, need even less care than granite, and the patterns are very consistent. Quartz products have patterns that look like granite and look like marble.

Marble is beautiful. It has more chance of staining than quartz or granite, so a little more care is needed.

Granite, marble, and quarts you can do an under mount sink.

Formica or laminate comes in several different levels of quality. The less expensive ones, are a very inexpensive choice relative to other countertops. You have to be careful to always cut on a cutting board, and not to put hit oabs directly on the surface. Inexpensive Formica can stain easily too, but if you have white you can use bleach to take out the stain. More expensive Formica can look like granite. It also holds up better than the less expensive Formica.

There are several different products that are manmade that will give you a continuous seamless look from counter to sink. These products also can usually be repaired easily if any scratches by a professional who can sand the area down a little. It also won’t have any corners or edges at the sink area where mold or germs can grow. It can have a very nice look, comes in many colors, but some people don’t like it because it’s a “fake” surface.

Other possibilities are Stainless Steele, butcher block, glass, and cement.

And ceramic tile, but the grout must be sealed periodically and it’s bumpy. But it’s a great look, and if you save extra tiles from the job, broken tiles can be replaced easily enough.

Right. I forgot ceramic tile. You can actually use granite and marble tile too. It can be much cheaper than a full slab.

I see I forgot to put on of the names for solid surface, Corian is probably the most well known.

I personally love quartz. I think it looks beautiful and it’s easy to care for.

For homes, granite. For restaurants, use stainless steel.

I like the concrete for the rustic/ industrial kitchen. Of course if you can afford granite, it’s a better material and won’t crack or stain, but many concretes have the same look.

I just had my countertops refinished. They used a polymer material that had granite in it, but was more durable and easier to take care of than granite. It can withstand temperatures up to 500F without damage. It was cheaper than getting all new granite tops. But nice granite tops look amazing.

@seawulf575 I’ve never heard of that. Was it expensive? Are you happy with how it turned out?

I prefer Formica. I do not like the hardness of stone or tile or concrete. I have had wooden countertops and enjoyed them but they were custom made and very expensive. I love Formica. You can’t ruin it unless y ou put something too hot on it. When I renovated I gutted my kitchen and bought new everything including striped Formica counters. The contractor didn’t know what to say when I told him what I wanted, but my kitchen is the big picture on his website homepage now. Guess what his wife is going to put in her new kitchen at her lake house? I always get what I like and want with no thought as to what is popular. Always.

Give me wood any day, a thick slab, smells delicious.

I did enjoy my wooden counters; they were hard rock maple. Beautiful.

@gorillapaws it was cheaper than new countertops. It just overlaid on my existing ones. And it turned out great. I have had zero problems with them. I think the company was Granite Transformations
