Yes. It’s called ‘estrus’. Or “being in heat”.

Summary from Wikipedia

@elbanditoroso There is a bit of difference between being in heat, which means to be ovulating, and female humans shedding the uterine lining every month, which happens when a fertilized egg doesn’t implant in said lining. Periods come two weeks ~ after ovulation.

imrainmaker's avatar

I don’t know what would be the scenario if that’s the case of humans as well..!!~

Dutchess_III's avatar

What @imrainmaker? I’m pretty sure human females are the only mammals who have periods. Other female mammals reabsorb the uterine lining rather than shedding it. Which must be nice.

imrainmaker's avatar

That’s what I was implying..if that was the the case like other mammals…it would have been a boon for you?

Dutchess_III's avatar

It certainly would have been nice. For the life of me I can not see what evolutionary advantage there is to periods. We’d be bleeding all over the trees and the smell is pretty intense and unique.

Dogs bleed while they are in heat, but it’s not menstruating. https://www.reference.com/pets-animals/long-dogs-bleed-heat-b46d20a02dc6274d
Horses don’t bleed during or between estrous.

Chimpanzees and the Fulvous Fruit Bat do. Other mammals don’t according to quora.

I tried to save time @Dutchess_III. I know nothing about quora. Is there a problem with it?

Here’s another site. Does it satisfy?

Check out this post by Dr. Suzanne Sadedin on Quora:

What is the evolutionary benefit of having periods?

MrGrimm888's avatar

Dutch. There is a lot about a female human’s “design,” that doesn’t seem evolutionarily sensible. I think that’s really odd, considering our species is so dominant…

Dutchess_III's avatar

@snowberry I’m a member of Quora. Sometimes it’s fine, and some fine, intelligent people post. Other times it’s like the Attack of the Blithering Idiot. You don’t know know what is fact and what is opinion. That’s not to say you can’t use it as a source, but I’d double check the claims.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@2davidc8 That was interesting…and I see at least 3 of our most intelligent Jellies upvoted it. It made sense to me to. I appreciated all her links and sources.

Dutchess_III's avatar

The article that @2davidc8 shows that our reproductive methods are part and parcel of the reason we’re so dominant @MrGrimm888.

What are some other things about the female design that doesn’t make sense to you?

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Well. We’ve had a thread on why childbirth, is so painful. The entire process seems to be a disadvantage, to the female.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, from an evolutionary POV, if a woman gives birth to 3 kids and the last one kills her, but all 3 kids survive, it’s a win for mother nature. Evolution favors the species, not the individuals.

And the reason it is so painful is, again, part and parcel of the reason we are dominant.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^It seems so unnecessary, to have so much pain involved. But I suppose that would imply some sort of intelligent design…

Dutchess_III's avatar

What does “intelligent design” have to do with anything? It’s painful because of the size of our brains / head at birth. Once the head is out, the rest is a piece of cake. Other mammals don’t have that problem because they don’t have gigantic brains.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I understand the anatomical reasons. I guess I’m just empathetic, to females having to endure such pain…

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, it’s necessary is what I am saying. And thanks. It hurts like a mofo. Jesus it hurts…and my deliveries were a piece of cake compared to many, many other women I know.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Just happy I’m not female I guess. I couldn’t go through all that…

Dutchess_III's avatar

At least we have options now a days. 70 years ago it was at home, with a midwife, no medical aid, nothing. Now a days, if we so choose, we don’t even have to feel it.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I read an article the other day about ,essentially growing babies in bags. I think that’s the future. If you get pregnant, they’ll take it out when it’s really small, and finish growing the child.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’d want to carry it myself.

Artificial womb.

LostInParadise's avatar

Off topic. If there are artificial wombs, does that mean that the embryo is viable upon conception? How would this affect the abortion debate? My guess is that it would cause both sides to become more adamant. Pro-abortion advocates would say that a small cluster of cells is in no way human, and would require a new requirement for humanness. Those opposed to abortion will say that it is indeed the case that an embryo is human as soon as it is conceived.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I guess I was thinking that the technology would cause no need, for aborting a healthy fetus. I figured that a female who didn’t want to be pregnant, for whatever reason, could have it removed, and placed in the artificial womb. The Mom can just sign it into state custody.

LostInParadise's avatar

The argument the other way is that there is no reason why a clump of cells should become a burden on taxpayers.
