Who is covered by the Q in LGBTQ?

Asked by LostInParadise (32183points) August 26th, 2018

It started out as LGBT, which seemed pretty inclusive. Then it changed to LGBTQ. I assume the q stands for queer, which I always thought to be a derogatory name for homosexual, and would be covered in a non-derogatory way by lesbian and gay.

Wasn’t this question asked not that long ago? Maybe I’m thinking of another site.

“Queer” is a reclaimed slur and is used by some LGBT people to label themselves, e.g. the term “genderqueer”.

It can also be used as a catch-all for any orientation or gender identity that isn’t straight/cis, thus the Q covers anything that isn’t specifically LGBT but is still not straight/cis (things like intersex, asexual, questioning, etc.)

According to Wikipedia there are two Q’s and one is Questioning and the other is Queer.

“LGBTTQQIAAP (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, ally, pansexual) ”

Probably a general category (“queer”) to handle all persons that the other letters don’t cover.

I’ve read that the Q covers “questioning,” for people who are uncertain and trying to clarify their sexual orientation.

Simone Beauvoir lables herself as Queer. She is pretty certain about it, too.
