Is Microsoft Word still unstable?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) August 27th, 2018

Back in the 90s and into the early 2000s it was REALLY unstable. I have a tendancy to push programs to their limit (as far as I know them) and Word would invariable lock up, freeze up, freak out, and create problems across my computer (which is why I stick with Excel if I can.)
It seem to have gotten a little better over the years, or maybe I just quit pushing it, but here lately I notice my FB hanging up sometimes. I check and I’ll have a Word document open. I close it out it it seems to release whatever. For example, I was waiting and waiting and WAITING for a picture to upload on FB. I killed the Word document that was open, and instantly that picture posted. Perhaps that was a coincidence.

Are you asking if it has gotten better in the last 25 years?

Yes, I use MSWord and Excel for hours every day. I cannot think of the last time it froze on me – like maybe 10 years ago.

The other piece of the puzzle is your PC or laptop – these are big programs and if you have an old PC with minimal memory, you’re going to have issues.

I’m pretty sure the mem is fine. I defrag and clean regularly. But I’ll run a memory check next time I’m ready to reboot. And delete all my cookies and stuff. Thanks.

Word would freeze if I tried to upload multiple pictures, for what ever reason. It would freeze if I made tables that it felt were too complex. I just gave up on the thing for anything but straight writing. I also use it for simple photo manipulating (making memes.) It so much easier in Word than anywhere else.
So far Excel seems to be able to handle whatever I can throw at it.

Have you upgraded your computer in the last 25 years?

Is your RAM/physical memory overclocked when this happens?

I using a 2013 copy of Office with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and have not had any unusual problems.

I haven’t had any in quite a long time, but then again, as I said, I quit pushing Word like I used to. I just wondered if it was still as unstable as it used to be.

Still? I’ve never experienced problems with MS office.

I did have an odd occurrence on my Word for Mac 2011 yesterday, a line was duplicated and when I went to delete it assuming it my error, a line in the paragraph below it was multiplied. A click in the toolbar solved it.
This was unprecedented and hasn’t happened again so far.
It must be acknowledged that the file I was in is an older file I managed to rescue from a corrupted flash drive (among less than half the total content). I’ve completely revised it but it’s the same file.
