If Democrats take the Senate and Congress, would it be wiser to not impeach Trump?

Asked by Pandora (32436points) August 28th, 2018

Someone pointed out that if Trump is impeached that Pence could actually have a chance of being President for the next 10 years. That would be a bigger nightmare.

So I wonder if the Dems let the investigation ride till 2020 and let Mueller get a ton of ammunition against Trump, they can dirty him up enough where other Republicans and Dems have a better chance of getting Trump out and Pence along with him. In the meantime, the Dems can control some of Trump’s crazy and we may be able to survive 2 years.

Especially if they get a hold of his taxes. Maybe something in them may take the shine off of him with some of his voters and make them look elsewhere in 2020. Especially since in 2 years, they will see their taxes rise and the rich just get richer with a tax break that just keeps on giving. Unless they can also find something on Pence as well.

The loss of the majority in either chamber of the Congress will render Trump’s Presidency impotent. The reason is that the Democrats can simply force Trump to account for the staggering pile of irregularities defining his Presidency. The sheer enormity of items on a public listing of Trump’s missteps, violations of rules and protocols and all around fkups will tie his hapless and inept administration in knots merely navigating the interminable ocean of impeachable offenses. His pretense at governing will be over, as it is exposed for what it is, and the remainder of his term will be dedicated to fighting off charges. Fan or foe of Trump, no one can argue that there has ever been a more juicy target for impeachment.

I’m thinking it could be wiser to not impeach him but to work like hell to undo or mitigate all the damage he’s done and block any further damage. As satisfying as impeachment would be and I’m not totally against it, it would paralyze and divide the country further. But I can’t say that I know for sure.

Hopefully, Democrats will gain control of Congress. If they do they should, as Republicans did when Obama was President, block the President’s ability to accomplish his (and Alt Right’s) agenda.

However, I am against his impeachment. Consider what would happen if the Vice President rules this administration and the possibility that he would be elected President in 2020.

If Trump colluded with the Russians in a way that may have had an impact on the 2016 presidential election then he needs to be impeached, regardless of whether it benefits the Democrats. I am skeptical of there being evidence of active collusion. Trump is clearly Putin’s stooge, based on his public statements. I do not see what Trump had to offer the Russians before his being elected.

@LostInParadise I read an interesting article on that. It said that Putin didn’t have any specific goals other than to weaken the Western alliance and sow chaos. He certainly has succeeded.

I’m with you on this, but we won’t get the Senate anyway.

Only in order to facilitate criminal trials sooner. If not, let the POS serve out his term and keep Christian Taliban Pence out of the drivers seat.

Trump’s not going anywhere. Pence for 10? I doubt it. I don’t see him winning any reelection.

The goal should be to stop the fool. Either get rid of him, or render him harmless. Impeachment is attractive because the fool has opened so many avenues to its avhievement, that he’s effectively defenseless. The payoff to capture of the House or Senate would be that he is compelled to undertake that defense in the public view, and the word impeachment need never be mentioned. Trump has provided us thus far with so many instances of leaving the tracks that the remainder of his term might well be occupied with him explaining his behavior to a hostile legislature. In addition, control of the House or Senate would mean that future transgressions on the part of “the stable genius” would be instantly confronted with the flamethrower of legislative opposition. Destroy the fool or eviscerate his agenda. Whatever works.

I’d rather them destroy his agenda. Let him fume in the Whitehouse, and spew stupidity on Twitter.

I think impeachment, however well deserved, would make things worse in more than one way. So I don’t hope for it, even though it would be gratifying to see it happen. This whole administration is just about the president and nothing else, and an impeachment process would guarantee months and months more of that. How about tending the shop?

It would be nice if the president had the decency to have a clean, quiet, decisive heart attack that put him out of service at a time when his term is nearly up and it’s too late for his VP to do much damage.

However, we have seen proof that more damage can be done in a few minutes than we ever imagined.

My guess is that the next time we have a Democratic House and Senate, we are going to see a ton of “This can never happen again” legislation, despite the fact that you can never make enough rules to keep anything from going wrong. In that way it will continue to be all about Trump long after he’s been made harmless.

(And does anybody think he won’t continue to exploit presidential privilege for financial gain long after he leaves office? Whatever he knows, there’ll be somebody willing to pay for it.)

I disagree that Pence would be a bigger nightmare than Trump. Yes, he is Conservative with a capital “C” but he is has executive experience and would be a normal President. If it were a choice between Pence and Trump I would vote for Pence in a heartbeat. Even though I am opposed to Pence’s policies, he is not the clear and present danger to the United States that Trump is. Whatever it takes to get Trump out of office. I would vote for literally anybody over Trump. I would even vote for Oprah, and I hate Oprah.

If Trump has committed an impeachable offence then he should be impeached and let the chips fall where they may. Whether to impeach or not shouldn’t be a political calculation.
