If you have and use a desk at home, what unusual things are in or on it?

Asked by Jeruba (56106points) September 2nd, 2018

If you have a desk other than a computer desk at home, and you use it as a desk, do you keep anything unusual in or on it?

By “unusual” I mean things that you would just typically not expect to find on or around a desk. For example: a bag of balloons; salt and pepper shakers; a power drill.

Any kind of paper or writing-related item, office supplies, knickknacks and souvenirs, illumination (even candles), communications devices, or academic or business-related stuff I would call “usual.” A pair of ice skates would not be usual. I have a hammer in one drawer; that’s probably not usual.

I think you might be surprised at how frequently hand tools might be found in the recesses and drawers common to desks. Hammers, pliers, screwdivers are just too useful for local tasks common to “office” work. And constant diligence is required to control the chotsky magnetism of large horizontal surfaces. There is always stuff on the desks that doesn’t belong, and the traffic through this house lately has converted the problem to one of alarming urgency.

With all the “usual” stuff on our desk and tables and chairs, there’s no room left We did find an old moldy bag of grapes under the desk last week.

I have a pile of cleaned up cast iron waiting in queue to be seasoned sitting on mine right now. That’s all that’s unusual at the moment.

I just looked. The only “unusual” items were 2 laser points and some Japanese postage stamps.

(And a loose .22 round.)

A small cuckoo clock. Three hand-carved, wooden brushes.

A stack of felt circles. One for each month my niece lived in Germany. (I’m working on an art piece for her.)
