Do restaurants in countries outside of the USA always serve a straw with a drink?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) September 7th, 2018 from iPhone

I’ve traveled to many countries, and for the life of me I can’t remember.

As you probably know, there is a big push in the US right now to reduce the amount of plastic straws being used. A lot of people who never use straws at home, for some reason have to use a straw in a restaurant. Why? I don’t get it. Is it the ice? More ice in the restaurant glass?

It got me wondering if restaurants in other countries always give a straw with a soft drink. Many other countries don’t use the amount of ice America does in a drink, and plus maybe they just don’t have the custom of using straws so much.

Another thing is why do people always put a lid on their drink at fast food? It’s another plastic item. I don’t. Not unless I’m taking it to go, which is very rare for me.

So, let me know the country and if they use straws all the time or not.

To go always in Canada. To stay they are being phased out.

Straws have more to do with mixing a beverage, than being used as a drinking utensil. Most alcoholic beverages, and in the south tea, is served with the likelihood of the customer needing to add/stir the contents of the beverage.

A vodka, and soda, gets a lime, and a straw.

Women primarily use straws, to avoid smearing their lipstick. Men have little use for straws…

They are useful for drinking beverages in a moving vehicle.
Also for kids.
I swear I don’t know a single woman today who actually wears lipstick McGrimm.

Unless it’s the straw that broke the dromedary’s bactrian, if there’s a straw in your drink then you aren’t in a restaurant.

In my part of Germany: Not a lot of ice at all. Straws always with fancy (colourful) drinks, probably for mixing them up. With regular drinks, you often won’t get a straw, but if you go to “trendy” places you would. Cool and conscientious restaurants use actual straw for their straws.

I have only ever encountered it with the colonial fast food imports.

I wear lipstick, but I usually wipe my lipstick off with a paper napkin before I eat.

They say that using a straw all the time gives you lines on and around the lips. I don’t know if it’s true, but it’s a deterrent for some.

My mom likes straws for a few reasons, one of which is to keep her teeth whiter since she drinks a lot of soda. I think she does have some lines and she never smoked. But, she only started using straws about 20 years ago. Growing up we almost never used straws. Not anywhere.

Not in France as far as I remember but you are usually drinking water, wine or a hot drink.

@MrGrimm888 Seems like for mixing a wooden stirrer should be sufficient.

^Of course. But not as cheap.

Dutch. At most bars I’ve ever worked, lots of girls wear lipstick, and makeup. It’s all over the straws when cleaning up the bar…
