If you have an e-reader or kindle, can you give me the pros and cons over just reading a book?

I’m thinking of buying a Kindle but would like your thoughts on having one.

I have a nook, and I love it. The features that are common to both nook and kindle (I’m pretty sure) that I like:

Adjustable font size. At night when I’m tired, the ability to have a larger font is easy on my eyes.

Choice of lit or not lit for dimmer environments. Not the same as a tablet or phone.

Ability to sort the library any way I want.

Smaller and lighter weight than most paper books.

Just released titles are less expensive than new paper books.

There are lots of sites where you can get good titles very inexpensively, like Bookbub.com.

It’s just easier all around for me.

The advantage is you can go on a trip, or on your daily commute, and carry a dozen books and a dozen magazines all in one light device.

One thing to think about is: do you get a Kindle, or do you have an iPad or tablet that can also serve as a kindle?

@zenvelo makes a good point. If reading off of a tablet or phone screen doesn’t bother you, there are apps. I get a headache reading a lot of bare text, so I prefer the nook, but if you want to test drive the concept, the app is a good start.

And I can look up stuff right away.

I really like my Kindle. It’s nice for me because I do most of my reading while commuting on the subway, so having a light device that has the equivalent of 100 pounds worth of books on it is very convenient. I also like being able to buy a book at the press of a button from my home and having it instantly.

Senior citizen here. I have macular degeneration and needed larger type. Books with large type are bigger and heavier. I can adjust the font size with my Kindle Paperwhite. It made all the difference for me in reading. It is back lit so I’m not trying to find the best reading light. It is small and portable and super light weight. For me it makes the difference between reading and not reading.

I have used the Kindle app on my iPad but I prefer reading a book book, I’ve decided. I do find the Kindle app handy if I just want to download a book quickly or to take a number of books on a trip. I actually find I read with less distraction if it is a book; if reading on my iPad, I tend to flip to Facebook or Fluther quite frequently.

I didn’t like it at all and quit trying after the first month.

I didn’t want to upload from various sites, or worry about end dates (read before 9/20/18), and I basically like turning the real paper pages of an old book.

chyna's avatar

Wait, what? You only have a certain time period to read the books you buy?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@chyna I uploaded from the local library and yes, there was a time frame and they’d go away. 30 days I believe it was.

janbb's avatar

@chyna No – when you buy a book and download it, it is yours. @KNOWITALL must be talking about library downloads or other sites where you can borrow a book.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@chyna Yes, I wanted to see how I liked it with the free stuff for a month and didn’t even last that long.

Plus, I read so fast, uploading a new book every couple of days was a pain in the booty.

canidmajor's avatar

I have the opposite reaction to @KNOWITALL with the uploading thing. Uploading from my couch at home is much easier than going to the library to check out books.
And what @janbb says, if you buy the books, they stay in your library.

I’m on my 5th Kindle. I don’t read books but I find that with the e-reader that I can change the font to a larger size which has become more critical in my older age & I can change the color of the background to suit my eyes at the moment. They have white, bright white & an off white which my eyes find soothing. I keep a lot of cook books on mine & I don’t need a place in my house to keep actual books that would be mainly gathering dust. My car breaks down & I’m waiting the normal 45 minutes for AAA to show up, I can pick up my Kindle & occupy my mind until they arrive…time passes a LOT faster!!! You can highlight passages that mean something to you without destroying the book.

I also downloaded a few games onto mine so I have other things to occupy my time when I don’t feel like reading. IF you’re a Prime member , you can read many books for FREE. I usually opt to buy them so I can DL them to the Kindle & not need to be connected to a WiFi. My local library has a deal with Amazon so I can DL certain books to my Kindle to read for the next 30 days. After the 30 days it just disappears off the Kindle. I’m working on teaching myself computer coding & I’ve DL’d a lot of reference books & much like the cook books, it doesn’t require a spot in my home & absolutely NO dusting!!! What they call games, I call crossword, word search, Sudoku, & I enjoy the Hidden Objects. Most of those are free & I limit myself to NEVER more than $2.99 for a purchase. Most of my reference books have been $0.99–2.99.

Are you aware that you can add Amazon’s Kindle app to your computer so you can try it out before buying the actual Kindle. You just can’t get the games on your computer…ONLY the books. You might want to try it to get a better idea. I leave my Kindle in my car & I can still read my books on my computer & when I’m out & about the Kindle opens to where I left off on the computer or the picks up where I left off on my Kindle.

When adding books, I just have to remember to turn the Kindle on within my WiFi range so they get added properly. When I go out to lunch, I’m usually by myself so I take the Kindle in with me & read another section of my current book When doing any crafts, I’ve got the directions in front of me without the book suddenly closing on me.

I always buy the WiFi ONLY version because I don’t want pay to $40 or more for internet service. I can get anything on my WiFi at home & use it on the Kindle later.I buy the cheaper version “with ads” & I’ve learned how to ignore them.My current Kindle has a micro SD slot & I’ve put my own mp3’s on it so I can listen to my favorite music anytime I feel the urge without needing to be connected to WiFi.

I love mine!!!
