Do the eyes look funny in my Batman drawing?

Asked by rockfan (14632points) September 30th, 2018 from iPhone

A few of my friends have said the eyes look really beady, and are unintentionally hilarious, which ruins the drawing for them. Personally I don’t see where they’re coming from. What do you think?

Yes, kind of. The irises should probably come down to the bottom of the eye. You do a great job with shading though.

To me, it is not so much the eyes that look ‘funny’, but the combination of the eyes (behind the mask) and the rest of his face.
His expression seems to suggest (to me) that someone just told him that Spiderman is way cooler, because he has a flashier costume, and, after contemplating it for a few seconds, he agrees, reluctantly.

Great drawing skills!

Thanks!

It’s probably the original reference photo. Keaton’s grimace is already slightly funny, but I think I made it even more prominent

I think the eye holes are too small.

ragingloli's avatar

He does look a bit derpy.
I think the eyes need to be a bit bigger, more angled inwards, the eyewhites brighter, and he needs some pupils.
I made some alterations

rockfan's avatar

@ragingloli

Are you joking? Your alterations looks ridiculous lol

I agree…it’s a great drawing! But the eyes don’t quite match the rest of the face. It’s like he wants to be mean and fierce, but his eyes look all sad and stuff.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t think @ragingloli‘s alteration looks ridiculous. It’s a very small alteration that made the eyes look fiercer some how.

I was on the Yearbook team my Sr Year. We graduated in our bicentenial year. We were the Derby Panthers. Our cover was hand drawn by a girl in my class who did a singularly spectacular job. Our teacher wanted a black panther who had just busted through the American Flag…but she wanted the cat to have “bedroom eyes.” I didn’t know exactly what that meant but she kept having our artist tweak the eyes to be softer and softer. Then end result was disconcerting to me. It didn’t fit quit right, but it was a few years before I put my finger on it.
Here is this panther who had the energy and the “rage” (or whatever) to come busting through this flag, but then he stops and looks like, Huh? What just happened?! It didn’t jive. It was actually kind of funny, and I don’t think that’s what the teacher had in mind!

Right eye (facing him) still isn’t fierce, IMO.

@ragingloli improved the eyes but it’s his lips that I find distracting. A bit caricaturish?

Great job on the rest though.

Dutchess_III's avatar

But…we need to know how @rockfan wants him to look….

rockfan's avatar

@ragingloli

I think the black outline in the middle of his lips is too wavy. Is there any way you could make it more straight so he’s not grimacing as much? I’d really appreciate that!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Wow. You did a really good job capturing that likeness.

mazingerz88's avatar

Now that I saw the original photo source…in the illustration maybe the area around the eyes needs more clarity and depth?

The lower lip might look better maybe if not as thick.

Dutchess_III's avatar

NOW he looks fierce…and kinda sexy @ragingloli!

ragingloli's avatar

bedroom eyes :)

mazingerz88's avatar

The mouth definitely looks much better.

The eyes still reminds me more of that Japanese actor Cary Fukunaga? Or something like that instead of Keaton in the original photo.

ragingloli's avatar

A lot of the expression, in the original photo, is the mask, and the shape of the eye hole cutouts, and I did not want to start drawing those, so I just modified the eyes themselves.

It’s time to start working from a live, three-dimensional model.

rockfan's avatar

I draw from live models about 6 hours a week, but still need to find a model that’s willing to sit for an entire finished drawing

rebbel's avatar

…, who’s prepared to do so wearing a batman costume ;-)

ragingloli's avatar

If you have enough money, you can try to hire Keaton himself.

LadyMarissa's avatar

The eyes should look menacing where yours look sad. The eyes & the mouth look like they belong to 2 different people. Other than that, you have a LOT of talent!!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Go see Raggy’s alterations, here

yesitszen's avatar

He seems a bit cross-eyed.
Great drawing. Amazing talent.

ucme's avatar

Looks like he’s fucking pouting.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I think it’s amazing.

ragingloli's avatar

He is just jealous, because he did not draw Bananaman, the quintessential British superhero.

ucme's avatar

When that one dick makes the thread all about them :D

Dutchess_III's avatar

Thank you for not making it Bananaman, @rockfan! What are you going to do with him now that’s he’s perfect?

Esedess's avatar

lol, yea. It makes me laugh, but I like it more because of that honestly. They’re too small/too close together. He looks kinda special.

Esedess's avatar

@ragingloli Damn nice job! That’s cool you can just change it like that. But comparing all versions to the original photo, I think the strangeness is because all you can see is his eyeball directly outlined by the mask. In the photo, you can see some skin around his eyes. Gives it a more natural feel instead of just two eyeballs set perfectly flush against perfectly cut/fitted eye holes. Also, thinks he looks too cat-like or Asian with the eyes slanted like that.
